Mind-blowing sex has been their relationship’s strongest bond, but Bella’s tired of being his secret—and Quinn’s not willing to let her go.

Review: I really didn't know what to think about this book. It really was one person talking about their feelings and going back to their book of memories.

I did like seeing how it is being the third person in a realationship and trying to make due knowing you can only share a little of your life with the person that you love. Why do you have feelings for someone that can never be with you and you have to be their secret? Can a person not just be with you because they love you and who cares what their family thinks?

It did answer somethings but it still left somethings unanswered. I just can't understand something like this. Maybe because of the life I've lived. So this book really didn't speak to me that much. Left me feeling like I was missing something. This is the first time that I have read a book by this author. I doesn't mean that I won't try another one of her books out.

Publisher: Samhain Publishing

Blurb: The most potent lover she’s ever had…and the morning sickness to prove it!

Lucy Rice knew that a night of uninhibited passion with sex-on-a-stick Reilly Jennings would leave a lasting impression on her body. But never in a million years did she expect to see a plus sign appear on that little white stick.

Pregnant? She can’t believe her eyes. When a second test confirms it, Lucy admits the truth. She’s about to be a one-night-stand mommy. How’s that for luck?

Reilly never wanted the responsibility of fatherhood, much less tie himself to an infuriating, headstrong woman like Lucy. Still, his sense of honor won’t let him abandon his baby like his biological parents abandoned him. Yet it isn’t long before he’s captivated by the coming baby—and the mother carrying it.

Lucy is rocked with all sorts of conflicting feelings for the father of her child. Unfortunately, she’s been down that road before, and it left her a blubbering mess. Not again. No way, no how. Except Reilly seems hell-bent on keeping her close. Maybe it’s the hormones, but Lucy’s beginning to forget why that’s a bad idea…

REVIEW:Reilly's Wildcard is Book Four in Anne Rainey's Blackwater Series. Don't miss out on the previous books in this series. This is one of my favorites.

Book One - Sam's Promise

Book Two - Vance's Rules

Book Three - Breaking Brodix

Lucy Rice is a woman recovering from a bitter divorce. Men are all dogs and untrustworthy in her eyes. They have proven that time and again throughout her life. Even her own father never had the time or love for her she craved. If you can't trust your father or husband then what man can you trust?

Reilly Jennings isn't your average guy. He likes to live by his own rules and a true relationship just doesn't fit into the mold. Until he meets Lucy and his world spins out of control. All he can think about it the sexy little minx that has stolen his heart. Now he is having second thoughts on where he thought his life was going.

Things only get more complicated after an amazing one night stand leaves Lucy pregnant and on the run from Reilly. But Reilly is determined to prove to Lucy he can be everything to her that no other man ever has been before. Nothing is going to stand in his way. Getting the girl of his dreams is the only thing he can think about and giving up on the head strong little minx isn't an option.

This story is about how a chance encounter can become so much more than just a one night stand. Raw with emotion and the sacrifices we are willing to make for love. Sometimes love doesn't come easy but it is worth fighting for and this story brings new meaning to love sneaking up on you when you least expect it.

The characters in this story are real and their emotions spill out on the page. You can't help but feel a connection and grow to love them. Hoping that Reilly can convince Lucy to trust him enough for him to show her what true love really is. Nothing short of amazing!

Anne Raine is a master at writing a family saga! I love reading about each brother and look forward to reading more in this series. Yep! There is still one brother left and I know his story is going to be a wild ride. Not to mention he is Reilly's twin brother. Yes ladies there are two of them.

I would recommend this story to anyone that loves a good romance that scorches the pages and may bring a tear to your eye as well. Kudos to Anne Rainey for letting readers peek into the lives of the Jennings family and fall in loves with their charm. The love and turmoil this family has suffered and come out better than they were through the love of a close family is astounding. Even with tragic childhoods the Jennings men are strong and loving because of their adoptive parents and that just warms the heart. Don't miss out on this series. It is so multidimensional that I can't even begin to tell you everything. You will just have to read it for yourself.

Happy Reading,

Tabitha Blake

VBT Review: High Stakes

High Stakes
by Cheryl Douglas

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Former party girl, Alisa Turner, made a deal with her daddy, Trey. He’ll provide the seed money for her new business venture as long as she promises to stay out of trouble. Too bad her good intentions tumble 30,000 feet when she meets a sexy stranger on a flight to sin city.
Hotel mogul, Liam Bryson, has never believed in love at first sight, but when a sexy little siren twenty years his junior tempts him into a night of high stakes Blackjack, he’s suddenly playing for keeps.
Alisa wakes up in Liam’s bed the next morning, cursing Tequila and the five carat diamond on her left hand. She demands an annulment before her over-protective father finds out she reneged on their agreement, but her new hubby isn’t prepared to let her go without a fight.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt:

Have you seen this garbage?” Trey Turner asked, tossing the rolled up newspaper in his daughter’s general direction. “That’s the third time this month I’ve seen your face in some rag, drinkin’ or partyin’ with—”

Alisa held her hand up. “I’m not having this conversation with you again. I’m twenty-five, not five. That means I get to decide what I do and with whom I do it.” She loved and respected her father, but if he had his way, she’d live under his roof and abide by his rules until she was too old to care about having fun.

Oh yeah?” He smirked. “Who bought you that fancy condo you just had to have, or how about that new A7…” His eyes fell to her shoes. “Gucci?” He whistled under his breath. “Must’ve cost a pretty penny. Might be the last pair you buy for a good long while. I hear waitresses are only makin’ minimum wage plus tips. That’s probably not enough to buy designer shoes or purses.”

You’re threatening me?” Alisa couldn’t believe what she heard. She and her father had always been close. He may not always agree with the choices she made, but he never threatened to cut her off before.

Call it what you want.” He shrugged his broad shoulders. “I’ll do whatever I have to do to keep you from self-destructin’ the way I did.”

Alisa knew her father’s history with alcohol. When her parents divorced, before remarrying more than twenty-five years ago, he’d hit the bottle hard and nearly destroyed everything he worked so hard to achieve. But she wasn’t him. She was young and single, trying to enjoy life a little before settling down into the life of domestic bliss so many of her friends seemed to favor. The life she’d almost had, before another woman stole it from her.

Review rating: 3.5 LIGHTNING BOLTS

Review Fast paced and intense, High Stakes is a new series from author Cheryl Douglass. This is from Nashville Nights, the Next Generation.

It starts off with Alisa, trying to find her way after a broken engagement. She's been living the high life, but it's about time to come down to reality and prepare to the next phase in her world. That ventures leads her to Vegas, with a new dreams, and right into the arms of Liam.

Their attraction is instant, and the sparks definitely fly. There are a few things that the two will have to face to be together. First off, the age difference.  Liam is about 20 years older.

While I do believe in love at first sight, I felt the attraction between them at first was forced. They're talking and then the next thing you know, they want each other. It didn't feel natural to me.  I do love the sizzling tension between the pair and the conflict that was set up on the road to their HEA.

I wasn't sure what to think of Alisa at first. She comes across as spoiled and fluffy, meaning not really much to her, but I realized how wrong I was as I kept reading. She had to grow on me, because I wasn't fond her her character at first.

Liam is charming and fun. Of course, he's older an experienced, but I like the way he tends to Alisa. He looks out for her, is careful of her feelings, and tries hard to really understand what he feels and how to act about it. The stakes are definitely high.

I've never read the Nashville Nights series, so this was my first introduction into that world. I enjoyed this story for the most part, other than how fast it seemed their lust and feelings developed for the other.  I'm intrigued and would definitely go back and read the Nashville Nights series.

If you're into hot contemporary romances, try High Stakes.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

Cheryl began her professional career as a nutritionist, but her love of books started at an early age. She studied writing for many years before she decided to pursue her passion as a full-time career. After receiving constructive criticism from several well-known authors, Cheryl finally had the confidence to write her first romance novel.

The first book in the Nashville Nights series, Shameless, was a book that had been dwelling in Cheryl’s subconscious for years. For her, the surprise came when the manuscript began taking on a life of its own. Characters came to life, secondary characters became more prominent, outlines were forgotten, and a single title evolved into an eight book series, and another eight book spin-off series entitled Nashville Nights, Next Generation.

One word would aptly describe Cheryl: workaholic. She lives and breathes her writing, when she’s sleeping, watching TV, driving, reading… it’s always in the periphery of her mind. Her imagination rarely takes a holiday, even when she escapes to a sandy beach with her husband and son, she’s planning, plotting, outlining, and daydreaming.

Cheryl feels blessed to be able to get up every day and do something she loves. The thousands of fans who have embraced the Nashville Nights have made that possible. She writes for the readers who ask for more, she writes to satisfy the muse residing inside of her, but most of all, she writes because she couldn’t imagine doing anything else with her life. It took her thirty-seven years to decide what she wanted to be when she grew up, but now that she knows, she’s convinced she’s found her purpose.

Review: I have to tell you, this book both shocked and surprised the heck out of me! In a good way, of course. I really had no idea where things were going and what was going to happen next. The characters are very well rounded and definitely bring life to the book. The heroine, Lex, has a lot of spunk.

The story is a mix of HOT scenes, humor, and between the two, I was laughing, gasping for breath and just trying to hold on! Might you want to have a fan nearby, because you'll be needing a bit of cooling off after some of these scenes.

Kudos to Avery Aster for creating a memorable story.

EXCERPT:

The whole office had fallen silent, but I saw that not everyone was watching us. Instead, some of them had turned to the far side of the room, as Rebecca stood and began heading our way. I realised most of them knew she had a part in this drama. And what about Rebecca? Was she half expecting this to happen? There I was, a total mess inside and out, and she appeared to be perfectly composed.
She came closer and I caught the eye contact between her and James. He had now turned paler than I’d ever seen, including the time he got food poisoning in Turkey and couldn’t stand for three days. As she walked behind the desks of her co-workers, most of them didn’t seem to know whether to freeze or flee.
‘Look,’ she said, ‘let’s not do this here.’ Not a blonde hair was out of place.
‘Where would you rather do it?’ I snapped back, but my voice was quivering. ‘Your bedroom? With my husband?’
James reached for me again, but seemed to change his mind and let his hand drop. ‘I know you’re furious right now, but it was just one stupid mistake in Vegas,’ he said quietly.
‘I don’t believe you! You’ve been in her bedroom!’ I was looking wildly from one to the other, sick with the thought of them wrapped around each other.
‘Well, actually,’ Rebecca had the nerve to put her hand on his arm, ‘it’s probably best that you know, Grace. It wasn’t a mistake.’ She glanced at me and I noticed for the first time an intense determination in her face. ‘I’m so sorry, we didn’t plan it this way. It happened after I hired you. But we can’t help how we feel.’ In her strappy beige sandals she was nearly as tall as James, and she barely needed to lift her pointy little chin upwards to gaze at my husband adoringly. ‘The thing is, I care about you and I want to be with you.’
A collective gasp flew round the office, almost loud enough to drown my yelp of pain. I could sense the techie crowd reaching for their phones to post Wild and crazy work love triangle on their Facebook pages. I felt like I’d been whacked in the ribs with a cricket bat, but I registered through my tears that James was shaking his head in defeat. The little pot slipped from my fingers before I could think of throwing paint in their faces. Instead, it added a permanent souvenir of the demise of my marriage to the carpet and his Hush Puppies. Rebecca sidestepped smartly and her sexy sandals escaped the shower. Too bad.
Failing entirely to live up to my name, I turned and fled with as much poise as a double-decker London bus.

Review Rating: 4 LIGHTNING BOLTS

Review: What happens when your dream becomes a nightmare?

That's what Grace is facing when suddenly, her life isn't what it seemed.  Shocked by a betrayal, Grace has got to find a way to get past it and move on.

Grace is one of those heroines that you can't help but like! She's had her dreams handed back to her, but she takes it in stride, works hard on the next chapter of her life, and deals with it in the best way she knows how.

The story is a moving journey for Grace, about how she starts over, finds a new life for herself, and learns things about herself she never knew before. The characters are memorable and quirky. The dialog zings and the narrative is just full of fun and humor.  What an enjoyable story, and I'm glad I had the chance to read it.

Spotlight: Emma: The Wild and Wanton Edition

Emma: The Wild and Wanton Edition
By: Micah Persell & Jane Austin

Blurb
Emma Woodhouse and Mr. Knightley won the literary world’s heart 200 years ago when Jane Austen first penned the story of their friendship-turned-love.  Emma is the young, rich, beautiful heroine with too much time on her hands and an overactive imagination; Mr. Knightley is her long-suffering friend who is always trying to steer her in the right direction.

Their love story is one of deep, dedicated affection blooming into passion.  But what about all of that sexual tension that crackles in the subtext?  In this Wild and Wanton edition of Austen’s classic, Emma and Mr. Knightley burn up the pages as they give in to their baser natures.  Discover the sexy scenes that readers of Emma have been imagining between Austen’s lines since 1815.

Excerpt (Less Spicy)
Mr. Knightley smiled, and Emma noticed that his lips were distractingly full.  It was the only thought she was capable of before he startled her by moving from the settee to the chaise to sit beside her.  The movement was slight and one he had often made in the company of others, but Emma was of a sudden reminded that she and Mr. Knightley had not been alone together, as decorum and Miss Taylor had dictated, since Emma was perhaps fourteen.  Perhaps decorum was in the right.  The moment they were alone, Emma’s thoughts were running rampant.
Mr. Knightley leaned toward her slightly, and she unconsciously mirrored the movement.  She could feel his breath on her cheek as he spoke.  “Come,” said he a bit roughly, “you are anxious for a compliment, so I will tell you that you have improved her. You have cured her of her school-girl’s giggle; she really does you credit.”
His words momentarily penetrated her focus on the way his mouth moved as he talked.  She realised he had complimented her.  Emma could not have anticipated the warmth she felt in her cheeks any more than she could have anticipated his praise.  He was not one to throw around flattery lightly.  “Thank you. I should be mortified indeed if I did not believe I had been of some use; but it is not every body who will bestow praise where they may. You do not often overpower me with it.”  The last had slipped from her lips unheeded, and Emma wished the words back again.  She could not tell what had driven her to reveal that thought, and in such a tone as to betray an injury Emma did not want to admit feeling.  Emma could only blame the odd state of her mind at present.  If she were to ever have hope of keeping her composure for the rest of Mr. Knightley’s visit, she must keep a tight rein on her thoughts.
Mr. Knightley gazed at her intently.  Those eyes that she now saw had flecks of green in them had heat swirling within.  He was sitting extraordinarily close.  The chaise was small and afforded no ample space.  She could feel the heat of his skin through his breeches and her skirts.  Her gaze dropped to her lap where her hands had fisted together quite on their own.  Oh dear, she thought as she felt her thoughts slip her control.

Excerpt

She was his own Emma, by hand and word.
He made a noise that seemed to emanate from deep within his chest, and the light kisses he had been gifting her with continued to travel up from her wrist to her inner forearm, to the hallow of her elbow at which point she completely forgot how to breathe.
He began to talk again, his breath caressing her skin as completely as his lips had seconds ago.  “You have made me a very happy man, my Emma.”  He punctuated the endearment with another kiss to her upper arm.  “I had dared not to hope—” a kiss to her cloth-covered shoulder “—dared not to dream.”
His words trailed off as he pressed an open-mouth kiss to her collarbone.  She felt the sweep of something velvety and wet, and her body jolted as she realised it was his tongue.  She heard herself make a noise, and heard him echo it.
“I am forgetting myself, dearest,” he said hoarsely into the patch of damp skin.  “Remind me,” he begged.  “Remind me of how I should behave.”
Her Mr. Knightley, Emma thought with exultation, always so concerned with how one should behave.  Emma was entirely uninterested in proper behaviour at this moment. “Not yet,” she whispered into his hair, the scent of the garden and sunshine greeting her as she rested her cheek against his head.  “Please not yet.”
He groaned and his kisses moved to the hallow of her throat.  “Your wish, my lady.”

About the Authors

Jane Austen is one of the most beloved authors of all time.  She never married, and as far as we know, she died a virgin.  More’s the pity.

Micah Persell is the award-winning author of the paranormal romance series Operation: Middle of the Garden.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in English and a double master’s degree in English pedagogy and literature, and she found particular delight in driving her professors to madness by imagining the characters’ salacious untold stories during class discussions of “serious literature.”  She is beyond thrilled that the object of her professors’ horror is now her profession.

EXCERPT:

ONE

Holly

Holly sat in the middle of a privet hedge outside her best friend’s apartment, planning her murder. She’d been there for an hour, her limbs bent like paperclips. She rubbed her arms where the hedge had scratched her and twisted to see a spider dangling beside her. Why hadn’t she worn long sleeves for heaven’s sake? She shifted, crouched back on her heels and peered up at the darkening sky. The air was dank and chilly and the smell of privet pungent in her nostrils. This vigil wasn’t the smartest thing she’d ever done, but she had to find out if her suspicions were correct.
A car pulled up. She sank back into the hedge, holding her breath and watching as a familiar figure crossed the road, strode down the path whistling, and let himself into the building.
Her breath came out in a rush. Her fingers tightened around the branch above her and it snapped, throwing her off balance. She rolled onto the ground and pressed her face to the grass, trying not to sob. Tom was supposed to be in New York, not here in Maida Vale.
She needed to be sure. After thirty minutes she clambered out, certain Tom wasn’t coming back. Cautiously she surveyed her surroundings, her breath whistling between her teeth. She shook out the kinks in her cramped limbs and through a haze of pain, disbelief and anger, reached the front door of the building.
What was Sonia’s security code? She knew it, of course she knew it – the exchange of security codes was as natural to their friendship as the secrets they shared. Her fingers fumbled on the cool smooth metal but eventually they remembered the pattern, and the door clicked open. She pushed it wide and stumbled into the foyer.
She couldn’t wait for the lift and ran up the stairs without pausing. Outside her friend’s door she wavered. Would her perfect life change irrevocably if she knocked? She thought of her less than happy single days before she met Tom. But she had to know, had to be sure. She raised her hand, then tapped on the door.
No answer. She knocked again.
“Who’s there?”
She opened her mouth to tell Sonia it was her, but as the words of greeting bubbled in her throat, she clenched her teeth, deciding it was better to retain the element of surprise. Her hand hovered above the polished wood of the door, then she brought her knuckles down on the unyielding surface and rapped again.
“Who’s there?”
A key scraped in the lock, the door opened, and Sonia stood in front of her. She’d never seen her friend look more beautiful. Her hair was dishevelled and her skin radiant and glowing, burnished with a fine mist of perspiration. Her eyes were soft and warm, but a split second later they widened in alarm.
“Holly.” Sonia’s fingers fluttered to her mouth, then down to the silk of her robe, which she tried to tighten around her. “I wasn’t expecting you.”
“Thought I’d drop round and see what you’re up to.” She struggled to keep her voice light, but could hear the edge of panic creeping into it. “Fancy a drink at the wine bar down the road?”
Sonia leant against the door. “It’s not convenient right now.”
“I’ll only come in for a minute then.”
“No.”
Sonia’s refusal sharpened Holly’s resolve. She twisted with speed and grace, and in one fluid movement lined her shoulder to the door and threw her seventy five kilos against it. It yielded and she slid her foot behind it, levering Sonia off balance.
“Stop,” said Sonia, in a voice as sharp as new scissors. “You can’t barge in here.” Her perfume hung between them; exotic, heavy and insidious.

Review: Have you ever felt like you just don't fit in? That's Holly's issue in this story. After an event that makes her want to try something new elsewhere, Holly runs into the struggle of fitting in. She tires hard to settle in her job, but the people around her aren't going to be easy about it.

The story is interesting, and many times I can relate with Holly, but there are also times that the characterization fell a little flat. It's like I'm in their mind and then suddenly I'm not. There was room for a lot of character growth, but I didn't fully see it all.

I understood Holly's predicament, and that's what really kept me going. I wanted to know how she'd handle things and solve her problem. The dialog has it's funny moments, and there are even a few emotional moments. Overall, I thought this book was good, and was glad I had a chance to read it.

Like my characters, I love my family and friends, beautiful shoes, anything sparkly, the ‘occasional’ drink, parties, and a good belly laugh.  I’m addicted to shopping, chocolate, bubble bath and anything else that smells nice, and the sort of tv programmes you’d never publicly admit to watching.

I live in a lovingly renovated home overlooking Auckland’s beautiful Waitemata Harbour, with my trusted friends Bronson Boxer and Dolce Dane.  They keep me fit and exercised, scare the burglars away, sit loyally by my side throughout my late night writing sessions, and hang on my every word when I read final drafts aloud.  They truly are my biggest fans, and I theirs!

I love my life, but not so much that there’s not room to live a load of other lives, through the hearts and minds of my characters, all of whom I adore, and some of whom I’m fortunate enough to call friend.

Spotlight on: Swan Story

Blurb: Soon to be married Daniel Macgregor meets mysterious beauty Sarah Mitchell on the day his father gives him a ballet company as a present. Although at first reluctant to take on responsibility, he changes his mind when he realizes Sarah dances for the same ballet company. Over the course of the production of "Swan Lake" they fall head over heels in love. Although unknown to Daniel,Sarah is cursed to turn into a swan from sunset to sunrise and only true love will break the spell. So it makes Sarah wonder, what will happen when he finds out what she is

Daniel takes a deep breath and starts to walk down the long line of dancers as Claudia watches keenly from the side. He passes Amy, Emily, Joanne and stops when he comes to the very last dancer ... Sarah.

“May I have this dance?” he asks as the crowd watches with bated breath.
Sarah answers promptly, “I’d love to!”

More murmurs are heard and Claudia glares at Daniel as he and Sarah walk to the centre. Daniel places her hand on his shoulder and puts his hand around her waist.  They look at one another as though they haven’t seen each other in years and everyone in the room notices the infatuation, Claudia included. The music begins and they start to dance. They take tentative steps that become more energetic as the music intensifies and as they move round the hall Daniel twirls her and dips her with very little effort. Claudia and others watch from the side and appear astonished by what they see.

“He is amazing!” Amy declares.

“Wonder where he picked that up?” Emily queries.

The dance continues with increasing vigour, but it’s too much for Claudia to bear and she hastily exits the hall pushing past a couple of the dancers. Sarah and Daniel continue to glide round the hall like seasoned pros, and approximately five minutes later, they end their dance with their eyes fixed on each other. Everyone in the room seems to be momentarily stunned as they neither speak nor move.

Then Robert starts to clap, closely followed by Anne; and gradually the whole room erupts into applause. Sarah looks round the room and appears amazed at the response, so she rewards them with a curtsey, but when the clock behind her chimes seven, she stands up from her curtsey with a look of dread.

Daniel notices the change and asks, “Sarah?”
She speaks quickly, “I have to go. I have to get out of here!” She immediately lets go of Daniel’s hand and rushes to the side.

 Author Bio:

My name is Priya Narendran and I have been a fan of paranormal fiction and fairy tales for years. I started writing when I was 7 years old and haven’t stopped writing since. So far I have written mainly fairy tale themed stories but I hope to branch out into paranormal romance and fantasy in the near future.  As well as writing I’m an avid film buff and my favourite films include My Fair Lady, Amadeus, Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Shining. I tend to write mainly fairy tale re-tellings mainly because I find it fascinating to look at fairy tales through a modern lens. I hope you enjoy reading these books as much as I have enjoyed writing them.

VBT review: All Over The Place

All Over the Place

By: Serena Clarke

Blurb
Livi Callaway has fled back to London after a reality TV disaster in New Zealand. Safely anonymous in the big city, she’s determined to stay under the radar from now on. But her attempts to build a new life are complicated by unexpected visitors from her old one, and new dangers and temptations lie in wait.
Late one night, she meets a mysteriously sexy American on the Underground – and the events that follow take her from Pooh Bear to the golden lights of Paris, via a trail of rock stars dead and alive. A family in disarray, a determined Swede, a crazed Australian and a childhood friend (who might yet be more than that) have her all over the place as she tries to discover the American’s secret – while keeping her own.
With help – and occasional hindrance – from her friends, what she eventually finds is something unexpected . . . sometimes, running away can lead you to exactly what you didn’t know you needed

Excerpt
After the third time, an American voice said, “You’re like an onion tonight.”
She turned and replied, without thinking, “That’s not the kind of vegetable I’d choose to be.”
The instant the words left her lips she knew it was all wrong. A mere second too late, it was blindingly obvious that he had said not onion, but yo–yo. How could she possibly have imagined that anyone would randomly liken her to an onion? Now, as she looked up at tanned skin, dark eyes, glossy hair, and teeth that could only be from across the Atlantic, her heart beat out of sync. She took in distressed jeans, vintage polo shirt, and a battered leather satchel hanging from his shoulder.
Suddenly she was unsteady on her feet, not just because the train was lurching unevenly. Looking at his face, perplexed and amused, she willed the floor to open up and drop her on the tracks. She would rather be electrocuted on the line than be a late–night crazy person on the Underground under his perfectly proportioned scrutiny. But there was nowhere to escape until the next stop, so she stood, cheeks flaming, praying he would take pity on her and pretend he hadn’t heard anything.
Instead, he said thoughtfully, “No, if you were a vegetable it would be something much more delicious. Sweet corn…cherry tomato, maybe.”
Was he flirting? She chanced another glance. A rugged sweep of stubble and a scar on his jaw roughened his looks, only making him more compelling. Well, of course, she thought, anyone who looks like that must flirt for a living. But suddenly she was uncomfortably aware of the harsh lights, and how tired she must look. She ran her hand through her hair, though she knew it wouldn’t make any difference. “That’s a nice thing to say,” was all she could think of to reply.
My mom always said, you know, if you can’t say anything nice…she was English, she liked good manners. Plus, it’s important to say nice things to nice girls, don’t you think?” And he gave her a wink.
She couldn’t help laughing, he was so shameless. “How come you can get away with being so cheeky just because you do it in that accent?”
You tell me,” he replied. “I don’t think you spring from round here either.”
Just then the train began to slow again, and there was a surge as people started to squeeze along to the doors. The American put his arms out and made a protective space around her, shaking his head. “Oh, no. You can stay here this time. I’m not letting you go until I solve this mystery.”
Up close he smelled warm and woody and clean, and she had to stop herself leaning in, eyes closed, and breathing deeply. At this distance he could probably hear her heart pounding. His full mouth turned up at the corners, a permanently tempting curve. Her hips threatened to arc towards him in a very inappropriate way. She wouldn’t have been surprised at the crackle of blue sparks. If she actually made contact with any part of him, she felt, there was a real chance she would just burst into flames.
Then the doors closed and the train started moving, and he grabbed the overhead strap to steady himself. “Maybe that was my stop,” she said, heady from their closeness. “Then what would I have done?”
Come for a drink with me?”
She was enjoying this now, feeling a glow, forgetting her embarrassment, and her sore feet and backache from standing in the salon all day. “At this time of night, unless you want to go clubbing, I don’t know where you’d find somewhere to just have a drink. This isn’t LA or New York.”
I’m not from LA or New York, I’m from Idaho.” He looked at her closely. “And maybe I didn’t mean somewhere.”
Ah,” she said, and suddenly felt a little flat. That’s right, she knew this story. Off she would go to his place, with him and his charm and banter. They’d have a night that seemed unbelievable. And the next day it would be unbelievable, unbelievably awkward, as she pulled on yesterday’s clothes and tried to find her way to an unfamiliar tube station, with unbrushed hair and uncleaned teeth. The walk of shame. She had no interest in taking it. There was a time, when she’d first arrived, maybe…but not any more.
Her change of mood must have shown. He said, “I’m sorry, maybe that’s not something you should say to a nice girl from…?”
Looking at his expectant, handsome face, she gave herself an internal shake. Lighten up now, she said to herself, he’s just a guy on a train, even if he does look like he stepped out of a catalogue. Just enjoy that someone, maybe, fancies you a little. And she pushed her shoulders back and put her smile back on.
Actually, I was born here, but I’ve been living a long way away. Further away than you.”
His face lit up. “Australia!”
No, sorry to disappoint you.” Why was Australia always the first guess? Anyone would think there was no populated land beyond Sydney. Next stop Antarctica.
Well then…damn, this is my stop.” They lurched together as the train made a last jolt, and his satchel banged against her hip. All at once she was aware of the crush of other travellers again, as they began their relentless move towards the door. The American was carried along in front of two large ladies, but called over their shoulders, “We could try to find somewhere.”
She hesitated for a moment, not wanting him to be gone. Then, just as the two of them realised his bag buckle had caught on hers, the large ladies swept him out and the doors closed. They looked at each other through the glass, his expression going through a progression from confusion to surprise to a sort of panic. And she was left holding his bag as the train pulled away.

Review Rating: 4 LIGHTNING BOLTS

Review:  Sometimes all you need is to get away to grab a bit of perspective.

That's exactly what the heroine, Livi feels she needs to do. Reeling from a betrayal and needing some time, she flees to a new place for that start over moment. What she finds is something amazing, fresh and new.

The story is filled with memorable characters. There's such room for growth for Livi, and I enjoyed getting to read about her journey. The plot is filled with rich, deep emotion, engaging characters and dialogue, and plenty of intrigue that kept me turning the pages.  This is one of those light, refreshing reads.  There's plenty of humor and reasons to bring a smile to your face. Overall, the story kept my attention and I was glad to have a chance to read it. Ms. Clarke is certainly an author to keep an eye out for!

Spotlight: Take a Chance on Love

Take a Chance on Love

by Christi Williams
Sensual Contemporary Romance
Published April 15, 2013 by Whiskey Creek Press/Torrid Books

blurb:

When Chancie de Leur meets highway patrol trooper Micah Taylor one frosty Wyoming night, instant sexual heat kindles between them. Chancie’s a lonely young widow who owns her own business and Micah is divorced, so there shouldn’t be anything holding them back. But Micah wonders if Chancie’s obvious wealth might become an issue, or the fact that she’s apparently the second woman in his life who has zero interest in ever having his baby.
Micah has no idea of the real problem between him and Chancie, until he meets her son. Ten-year-old Jamie de Leur is determined to break up his mom and her lawman, and Micah questions whether any relationship with Chancie is worth dealing with the spoiled kid she’s raising.
In a showdown over Jamie breaking the law, Micah has to decide if he wants to be Chancie’s cop—or her family man.

excerpt:

Micah tossed his Stetson in the back seat. Chancie got in, put the car in gear, and started to back out of the parking space.
Stop,” he said.
She turned her head to look questioningly at him.
Seat belt.”
I never wear one. I had a car once whose belt wouldn’t unbuckle. Scared me to think I couldn’t get out if I needed to.” She smiled ingratiatingly, expecting to have her way.
He didn’t smile back. “I don’t mean to be a hardass, Chancie. But I’ve seen too much damage done in wrecks to sit here and let you drive without a belt. I insist you buckle up.”
She drew in a breath. “Would you arrest me?”
He grinned. “I could. But I wouldn’t. I’m asking you nice, though. Please buckle up. For me, if not for yourself.”
All right, Micah.” She reached for the belt, clicked it into the lock. “Better?”
Much.” He faced forward again, leaning his head back against the rest.
She finished backing up, then drove through town and out past the city limits. At a little turn-out called Fourteen Mile that featured a spring fed pond, frozen over now into a solid sheet of ice, she pulled off and parked. She let the car idle, hands on the steering wheel and eyes straight ahead. A glow suffused the bluff overhanging the pond, and soon the moon began to rise, a sliver of gold that seemed so close she could almost reach out and touch it.
Even though the little traveler’s stop featured restrooms, Micah doubted if they’d be disturbed at this time of night. As she sat and said nothing, he began, “Chancie.”
This isn’t as romantic as I thought it would be,” she said.
He felt a laugh rumbling deep in his chest. “Honey, we haven’t done anything yet. You want me to hold you, meet me halfway over the console.”
