VBT: Destination D.

Tell me about yourself, and your writing. I was born in Milwaukee Wisconsin and graduated from Spelman College with a BA in English. After working in Corporate America for many years, I decided to become an entrepreneur and ran my own an advertising and public relations agency for 15 years. My clients were Fortune 500 companies and their areas of specialty were banking, travel and retail. I have two daughters and a son, and my husband and I recently celebrated our 22 year anniversary. I initially started writing plays and had two out of the three produced locally in Atlanta. My first play was a “twist-fictional” piece. It was about Abraham Lincoln discovering that he was black. You can imagine the type of questions and intrigue that this play sparked among playgoers and historians! It was definitely unforgettable and I might add successful! Destination D, my novel, as originally written as a play, but my best friend convinced me to turn it into a novel and so I did. Now, I am currently finishing up the sequel.

How long have you been writing? How many published books do you have, and what genres?
I have been writing for as long as I have been knowing how to hold a pen in my hand! When I was a little girl, I used to write short stories and poems. I enjoyed it then, and I still do! Destination D is my only published book and it would fall under women’s fiction and romance. Please stay tuned for its sequel and for another book that I am working on. This book is non-fictional but very motivational and educational for women only! The genre is women’s issues.

Do you write in multiple genres or just one? If just one, do you ever consider straying outside your genre? Yes, currently as I mentioned I am writing the sequel to my current book and also a non-fiction book.

Are you a plotter or do you write from the seat of your pants? I am a plotter. However, sometimes when I write, my plots change. I don’t think it’s something that I plan, but it appears that all of a sudden the characters just jump off the page and start talking to me! I know that sounds crazy, but it’s sooo true!

What is a typical writing day like for you?
Unfortunately, I am a “mood” writer. I have to be in a certain presence of mind of creativity before I can write. If not, my writing becomes stale and the characters become mute!

Who do you love to read? Favorite authors, favorite books?
I love John Grisham. I have read so many of his books that each one is better than the next to me.

What is something you'd like to accomplish in your writing career next year? I am hoping to get Destination D made into cable TV movie or series.

If you could have one paranormal ability, what would it be? It would be the one that I dream about often. I would love to be able to lift myself up in the air and just float, especially during times when I’m in a boring meeting. I would love to see everyone’s face watch me as I floated right out of the room. That experience and the look on people’s faces would be priceless!

If you could keep a mythical/ paranormal creature as a pet, what would you have? It would be a Pegasus. Again, it’s something about having the freedom to just be lifted up in the air as I referenced with the other question! And to take off in the air with a horse with wings would be an awesome experience!

Tell us a little about your latest release. It’s a story about what happens when life interrupts our destination. My three characters were best friends in college. Each of them made a pact to each other that only one of them was able to fulfill after they graduated. This breach of promise causes each woman to self-sabotage in ways that neither of them could have ever imagined. The first friend leads a secret life of multiple personas, and the second friend allows her domineering ambition to drive her into a collision course with herself, that leads her to a life altering event. And finally, the third friend seeks refuge from a regretful past that finally catches up with her present.

What is something that you absolutely can't live without? (Other than family members) My cellphone! I’ve tried living without it. I was miserable.

Could you ever co author a book with someone? If so, who would you choose, and what would you write? Yes. I have been in talks with co-authoring with a dear friend of mine. We were contemplating doing a book of stories on women who have moved through hardships during the recession and have managed to get themselves back on top! It would focus on religion and how faith can get you through anything!

If you could spend a day with anyone from history, dead or alive, who would it be, and what would you do? What would you ask them? It would most definitely be First Lady, Michelle Obama. I would want to know what has been her biggest regret since she became the first African-American First Lady and what would she have done differently to avoid the regret.

What are some of your other hobbies outside of writing? I really enjoy collecting dolls from different parts of the world. I had originally started when I was a little girl in hopes that one day I would pass them down to my daughters. But, this hope was soon shattered when both of my daughters told me that they didn’t want the dolls in their room because they felt like the dolls were always staring at them.

If you were on the staff to have a book adapted to movie, what would you pick?
I would have to say, it would be mine! Destination D!

What is a talent you wish you had, but don't? I wish I had a talent for organization. It would save me a lot of time and money. I admire people who have a place for everything. I am still working on getting my emails organized from when the computer first became popular!

Favorite color? fuschia

Weather: Hot or cold? I’m not partial to either extreme. However, I prefer hot only with air conditioning and cold only with heat!

Favorite place to read? A beach.

Favorite meal? Lobster, baked potato and sautéed spinach. I’m licking my lips just thinking it about it, now!

Favorite non-alcoholic drink. – sweet tea. The sweeter the better!

If you could travel anywhere and do anything, no limits or money holding you back, where would you go? With that type of financial freedom, I think I would be a globe trotter and visit every country with the exception of the ones at war.

BLURB:

A broken promise from their school days at Spelman College takes three successful friends in Atlanta to an unexpected destination of discord, duplicity, and denial. Their personal demons drastically alter their friendship and their life’s destiny.

The first friend leads a secret life of multiple personas that allows her to escape her own reality and ease into a life of deception long before her true identity is discovered.

At the pinnacle of her career, the second friend is self-driven, sexually suppressed, and highly explosive . . . blowing up at anyone who crosses her path. Her domineering ambition drives her into a collision course with herself and steers her in an unexpected direction that becomes life-altering.

The third friend is a single mother seeking refuge from a regretful past that has finally caught up with her present. Just when she thinks her future is solid, it begins to crumble as her fate is altered by a past romance that resurfaces . . . resulting in an unexpected resolution.

  5. Hi Lori,

You are a new-to-me author so I will enjoy following your tour this week to get to know more about you and your book. BTW, the book sounds like a great story with 3 powerful leading ladies. If your book were to be made into a film, who do you see playing the lead parts?

    1. I would love for Dee to be played by a "new face/ upcoming actress." I could easily see Kerry Washington or Meagan Goode playing Pam and Jill Scott playing Amanda. Are you a movie buff?

  6. Lori...I, too, am a fushia fan and a fan of sweet tea. I lived South of Atlanta for many years (in Macon) and developed a need for "rot-your-teeth" sweet tea.
