  1. His hand covered mine and he leaned down slowly, giving me plenty of time to pull away, and he kissed me. It was the gentlest kiss I’d ever experienced, his lips moving against mine softly. My heart pounded in my chest and I felt lightheaded. Of its own accord, my body moved closer to him. I breathed in the spicy scent of his aftershave and melted into him.

His lips released mine and I blinked up at him, feeling drunk off his kiss. “Goodnight, Zoey.”

    “Wait. Don’t leave.”

He shook his head. “Me staying would be a bad idea. We don’t really know each other.”

“I’ve never felt anything more right than being in your arms,” I said softly.

  2. Unexpected Wife
    by Paige Warren

Grinning, Braedan leaned closer, a twinkle in his eyes right before he kissed her.

Ainsley stiffened until he pulled her against his hard body. The moment her soft curves hit his hard muscles she knew she was lost. She’d always been a sucker for a strong, dependable man. Well, dependable might be a stretch in this case, but he was definitely strong.

Wrapping her arms around his neck, she kissed him back. When his tongue slipped between her lips, she hummed low in her throat. Her fingers tangled in his hair, tugging him closer. Her body had taken on a mind of its own.

Her brain was screaming at her to stop, that she didn’t know this man, this convict. How could she trust a stranger when she hadn’t been able to trust the man she’d lived with? She should be running away, not kissing him!

  3. The Bull Rider's Brother
    By Lynn Cahoon

"You should lock up when it gets dark." His voice drifted, warm and mellow, through the darkness.

"The screen is latched." She flipped the hook open.

"That wouldn't keep an angry raccoon out of the house." James stepped inside. "You need a deadbolt."

    "On a screen door, James?"

She said it to say something, to ground herself, when he closed the distance between them and the heat from his nearness enveloped her, causing her senses to scatter. She didn‘t move aside.

"Liz." James leaned toward her. His lips dragged across her face, softly searching for her mouth. When he found it, his kiss intensified, became more demanding, harder. He pulled her close and she melted into his kiss, wanting more. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him to her.

In an instant, the inside door banged shut and James maneuvered them to the couch. "I‘ve missed you."

  4. From Cera's Place by Elizabeth McKenna:

Cera swung the heavy inner door shut, but as she fit the key in the lock, someone pushed the door open from the other side. Panicked, she called out, “Sorry, we’re closed!”

Her alarm changed to surprise when Jake stuck his head through the opening. “Oh, it’s you. Weren’t you heading out of town? It’s been a long night and I need to close up, Mr. Tanner, but you’re welcome to come back tomorrow.”

Crossing the room, she picked up a rag and began wiping down the bar. In the mirror on the wall, she watched his reflection come up behind her. Her eyes widened in disbelief when he placed his hands on either side of her body, trapping her against the bar rail.

Feigning indifference, she turned around to face him. Earlier in the day, his eyes had appeared the indigo blue of a stormy sea, but now they reflected a dull black. It was impossible not to see the aching weariness in them.

The scent of soap mixed with leather and tobacco filled her nose. If the price of his recent bath included a shave, he had wasted his money. A fine line of dark stubble covered his chin and cheeks. She tried to resist the urge, but her eyes sought out the red scar running down his brown face.

Hoping to make up for that slip of rudeness, she asked, “Are you feeling better, Mr. Tanner?”

“Better?” His eyes narrowed slightly in confusion.

    “Your headache, is it gone?”

He nodded, understanding. “Yes, thank you for asking. I’m better now.”

Taking one of her hands, he placed it next to his eye, where the scar began. He moved her fingers down his cheek over the raised path, stopping at the corner of his mouth. Then, he dropped her hand and placed his on the bar rail.

“Are you better now?” he asked in a low voice.

Cera shook her head. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to stare. It’s just…how did you get…?”

He ignored her question, though the corner of his mouth lifted into a half smile.

“Do you find something funny?” She sidestepped into his arm, thinking he would move and let her pass. Instead, he held firm, shifting his body back into alignment with hers.

“Oh no, there’s nothing funny going on here.” He closed the distance between them to a mere inch, but when Cera stiffened, he stepped back.

“Well, what are you doing here, Mr. Tanner? Is there something you need?” She tried to sound exasperated.

Jake’s laugh held little humor. “Miss Cera, I have no idea what I need, but I did come here for a reason. Call it an experiment, if you will.” With his finger, he lifted her chin and then pressed her lips with his. When he released her, he sighed. “That was better than I remembered it to be.”

He looked into her eyes one last time before walking out into the night. Cera let go of the breath she had been holding. She knew what he needed, but she was pretty sure she needed it more.

  5. YEAH! Finally a theme I have an excerpt for! First kiss between Duncan and Katarina in Only Scandal Will Do:

“Lean your head just there, sweet.”

She could hear the strong beat of his heart, smell the clean, comforting citrus of his cologne. The fresh scent reminded her of home.

“You will be all right now,” he whispered, holding her securely to him. Safe at last. She closed her eyes and leaned into his caresses, contentment stealing through her for the first time since leaving Virginia.

With a finger beneath her chin, he lifted her face up to his. Her eyes flew open and peace fled as he pressed her mouth with a gentle kiss that stole what breath she had left. His lips--soft, warm, insistent--generated heat all the way to her toes. A sensation so overpowering she forgot everything around her, giving herself completely to the pleasures of that kiss.

Somehow his tongue slipped through her quivering lips, stroked her tongue, and caressed the depths of her mouth. She groaned, her face aflame at this unexpected intimacy. No man had ever kissed her this way, plundering where he would and denying her the will to protest. Raw power leaped from his mouth, streaked through her body, inflamed her craving even more.
Every magnificent swirl of his tongue resonated, not only in her mouth but in the deep, private places of her body as well. She moaned into his mouth, the low, guttural sound rising from some unknown reservoir of need. Pressing against him, she slid her hands up the steely hard muscles of his back evident even through his cloak and clothes.

All she wanted was his hands on her, his tongue in her. Of its own accord, her tongue thrust into him, bringing a growl of approval that encouraged her to frenzied explorations of his warm, wet mouth. He slipped a hand down and rested it on the swell of her breast, impudently nudging a finger inside the gown’s low decolletage and brushing it against her aching nipple.
