My favorite Books read this year

It's the end of a year once again.  I hope next year for the blog to take off and really pick up.

Today I wanted to share my list of favorite books read that came out this year.  Now, this list is not in any particular order. And it's hard to pick just a few that stood out. I read 314 books this year! That's a record for me, but with all the reviewing I do, I guess it really adds up. lol.

1. Already Home- Susan Mallery.

I'm a longtime fan of this author, and Already Home was another winner! This one is a bit more of a general women's fiction than romance, but still wonderful nonetheless. There were moments that made me laugh and cry, and yes, this book totally tugged on my heartstrings. It's on my keeper shelf and I tell as many people about it as I can.

2. How Sweet It Is by Sophie Gunn.

I am in dire need of more Sophie Gunn books!  Talk about another tugging on heartstrings kind of book? This is another.  I love how this book doesn't just focus on a romance, but focuses on relationships of other kinds as well. The characters were crafted so well, and the story grabbed me instantly. This was a sit down and read in one sitting book.  There was another by this author, Sweet Kiss of Summer, and I'm hoping for more books soon.

3.  The Restorer by Amanda Stevens.

This isn't a mainstream romance either, but The Restorer gave me chills and goosebumps. It's no secret I love a good book involving ghosts, and this one really kept me at the edge of my seat. I made the mistake of reading it late at night and I tell you, every bump and thump I heard made my heart beat faster!

This looks to be the first in a series and I can't wait to read what else is in store for Amelia Gray.

                                            4. Sex and Key Lime Pie by Kat Atalla

This is a hidden gem. It's a contemporary romance involving second chances.  Luc and Cheyanne have a past, and it takes Cheyanne coming back  to realize feelings haven't changed. But secrets will be discovered, and the sparks will fly.  This is published by The Wild Rose Press, and I don't think this book gets enough attention. This was a first time read by Kat Atalla for me, but I can't wait for more.  Sex and Key Lime Pie is an emotional book, filled with some hot love scenes and plenty of tension.

                               5. Seaborne by Katherine Irons

Seaborne seriously blew me away. It's a paranormal romance with mers, and I'm always on the look out for books like that.  Clare is an injured woman, and she's gone to stay somewhere to heal. When she's with  Morgan, her emotions are heightened and she is free. Add in some suspense, this book really kept and held my interest.  Katherine Irons is an author to keep and eye on in my opinion.

                                              6. Black Ties & Lullabies By Jane Graves.

A funny romantic comedy about two opposite people and a choice they made that ties them together. Now if only they could get along and stop driving each other crazy.
I was ecstatic to see that Jane Graves had new releases this year, and Black Ties and Lullabies didn't disappoint. I've told friends about this one and put it in their hands and told them "Buy it, buy it!" They did,. Bernadette and Jason were a great couple to read about, and their story won't be forgotten soon.

                   7.  Georgia on My Mind By Marie Force

In all honesty, it's hard to pick one Marie Force book that stood above all the rest. Georgia on My Mind features Georgie, and her two roommates. I loved how the author integrated three romances into one book.  Marie Force's books keep the reader entertained and it's hard to put down the books until they are done. Marie has quickly become an auto buy for me.

                       8.         After Midnight by Sarah Grimm

Yet another book that was riveting and excellent. Isabeau and Noah's story  captivated me.  I'd never read a book by Sarah Grimm before, and I won't hesitate to pick up another with this author's name on it. Talk about a tortured heroine? Isabeau is definitely that. She lives in her past and hides away from love, she keeps her wall up high. It takes a strong man like Noah to slowly break through the barriers and send that wall tumbling.

                                       9.  Veiled Mirror By Frankie Robertson

One of the best romantic suspense books I've read this year!  It's a story of secrets, lies and murder.  A woman takes her sister's identity after her death to find the killer. Her sister believed someone wanted her dead.  What a book with twists and turns. This is another published through The Wild Rose Press. I really enjoy many books from this publisher. I can't wait to see if this author comes up with more romantic suspense novels.

                   10.       Restless Heart by Wynonna Judd

Yes, I was insanely curious about this book. Wynonna is a longtime well known country singer, from when she sang in the duo The Judds, to her solo career. When I heard she would be releasing a debut fiction novel, I wasn't sure what to think. But I got a copy of Restless Heart and enjoyed it. The book features a small town girl named Destiny, and she wants to make it big in Nashville.  The story focuses on her struggles to get to stardom, and the relationships between Destiny and members of her family. Wynonna  Judd uses her knowledge of the music industry to make the book realistic.

And a book I anticipated about that turned out to be a bust?

Sweet Valley Confidential: Ten years later.

I admit, I was a Sweet Valley fan girl when I was a teenager. I lived for the drama, the angst, the love of Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield. They're kind of iconic to me. I followed them from Sweet Valley Kids, all the way up to Sweet Valley University.  I couldn't wait to see what happens when they're adults.

The book did not live up to it's hype. There were too many flashbacks to times before. Not all of the characters were even mentioned. I was surprised at many of the lives they lead. It just didn't seem very well put together. I'd have rather that book not even come out so I could have thought up a better ending.

I hope you all had a great year, and that you read many wonderful books. I'm looking forward to what the new year has in store.

Until next YEAR,

Leia Shaw Interview and Review

Hi everybody, welcome back! It's almost Christmas! I hope you're ready.

Today I have a review for Leia Shaw's Destiny Unchained, and I have also been able to interview Leia. So I hope you enjoy today's post!

ME:  First off, tell me about yourself, and your writing.

LS:  About myself? I live in New England. I have 6 tattoos. I love chocolate. I'm addicted to Diet Pepsi. And when I'm not taking care of my two kids and helping my husband renovate our 1853 house, I'm plotting books in my head.
ME:  How long have you been writing? How many published books do you have, and what genres?

LS: I've been writing in some aspect my whole life, but I've only been writing romance books for a year and a half. I have three published full length novels and one novella. Together, they make up my paranormal romance series, Shadows of Destiny.

ME:Do you write in multiple genres or just one? If just one, do you ever consider straying outside your genre?

LS:  I've been concentrating on just the one and I still have four more in this series to complete. But right after I swore I would never write contemporary (I love fantasy and paranormal too much), I teamed up with an erotica author to write a contemporary erotica book based on a true story. I'm very excited about this project, due out February 2012, because it's very unique, it's sexy, and it's real life. But other than that, I'm sticking with paranormal.

ME:  Are you a plotter or do you write from the seat of your pants?

LS:  A little of both. I have a general outline but fill much of it in as I'm writing.

ME:  What is a typical writing day like for you?

LS:  A writing day? I'd love one of those! Usually, I write while my two year old is napping and then after my kids go to bed. Sometimes I get a few hours on the weekends, or an evening to myself. And when I do, I try unsuccessfully to stay away from twitter and facebook. I am a master at procrastinating.

ME:  Who do you love to read? Favorite authors, favorite books?

LS:  Kresley Cole is my hero. Favorite series would be Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews. The Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning. And no male hero beats Jamie Fraser from the Outlander.
ME:  What is something you'd like to accomplish in your writing career next year?

LS:  I'm really not very picky. By next year, I should have my 4th book released and be well on my way to my 5th. Like any writer, fans are what makes it worthwhile. I'd love to hear from more fan.
ME:  If you could have one paranormal ability, what would it be?

LS:  Fly. I know it's kinda lame and common but I love heights.
ME:  If you could keep a mythical/ paranormal creature as a pet, what would you have?

LS:  Dragon, of course.
ME:  Tell us a little about your latest release.

LS:  Destiny Unchained is about Natalia, a vampire assassin who has some baggage in her past that's caused her to cut off her emotions. Now she's more like a robot than a human being. Cristian is exactly opposite. The alpha of a werewolf pack in Wyoming is warm and passionate, and though he has a tragic past, he's healed from it.  He wants the same for Natalia. Together they hunt down a werewolf serial killer. Cristian pushes Natalia out of her comfort zone and begins to melt her icy heart.
ME:  What is something that you absolutely can't live without? (Other than family members)

LS:  Kindle!
ME:  Could you ever co author a book with someone? If so, who would you choose, and what would you write?

LS:  Ha ha. See above.
ME:  If you could spend a day with anyone from history, dead or alive, who would it be, and what would you do? What would you ask them?

LS:  Umm...I'd have to pick Jesus. I think we'd just hang out. He's a cool dude so we'd get ice cream sundaes. I'd have so many questions but if I had to pick one, I guess it would be, "is it all true?"
ME:  What are some of your other hobbies outside of writing?

LS:  Playing with my kids. Reading. Making videos. Photography. Anything creative.

ME:   If you were on the staff to have a book adapted to movie, what would you pick?

LS:  I don't know. I'm  not a fan of my favorite books being turned into movies. I think Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark would make a great HBO series, like True Blood, but only if they stayed true to the books.

What great answers. It's been fun getting to know you a bit, Leia!

Leia is kind enough to provide an excerpt from Destiny Unchained!

Excerpt:    She opened her mouth to call for Cristian. But something that felt like a bus rammed into her, toppling her to the ground. For the second time, the air rushed out of her lungs and she struggled to breathe. The beast was heavy on top of her, but took care not to crush her. His powerful arms thrust hers over head, pinning her to the ground. Even with five-inch-long nails, he was careful not to hurt her. His chest heaved, blood dripped from a bite mark on his neck. With every ragged breath, a snarl escaped his throat and blew the hair from her face. When she struggled, he growled quietly in warning.

His gaze roved her over rapidly. Her eyes, her lips, her neck, down to her breasts, back to her eyes again.

She could have killed him. Probably. Maybe. But she didn’t want to kill him, she wanted to calm him. In an ultimate act of trust, she yielded. Her body sagged underneath him, her pride stinging a bit. And, in the wolf way, she turned her head and bared her throat. Male satisfaction burned in his eyes before he leaned into her neck with his nose and inhaled.

His savage moan tickled her skin. Then his body contorted. It melted on top of hers, fur disappearing, and half its mass. In only seconds, a human took its place. A naked human.

She tried to pull her arms down but he gripped them harder. “Be still, Talia,” he said, his voice husky like gravel. “Don’t move.” His face warmed the crook of her neck. “I could hear your pain from miles away. Do you know what that does to a man?” She couldn’t speak, only lay there under his heaving body. “My Natalia, hurt and afraid.”

She opened her mouth to deny that last part, but he bit her chin.

Lifting his head, he stared down at her. Calmer, more human now, but still on edge. “Don’t argue, Talia, for once. Please. I have to taste you. Do not deny me this.”

It was a command, but his eyes asked for permission. She nodded.

He pressed her wrists into the snow. “Leave them there.” In a flurry of movement she could barely process, he had her stripped from the waist down. Her lips parted and she exhaled a gasp. Bared in the middle of the snowy mountains and she stilled burned for him. His hands, one of each of her thighs, pressed down, holding them open for his gaze. His groan of approval was so animalistic she shivered all over.

She watched him through half-lidded eyes as he leaned down and blew on her clit. Her hips arched off the ground. He threw both her legs over his shoulders and held her off the snow with her ass in his hands. Her arms, obediently placed over her head, and her shoulders were the only thing touching the snow. Then he feasted on her. Nipping and sucking, licking and teasing.

Her gasps turned into cries for mercy. Her squirms turned into flails. But he held her tight and steadily went on, bringing her to the edge then slowing, over and over.

When her clit burned and throbbed and she couldn’t take anymore, she pleaded, “Cristian, please!”

One more long decadent lick then he flipped her to her hands and knees, nudging her thighs apart with his. He entered her too slowly and she pushed back into him. His soft chuckle vibrated through her body. His hand snaked forward and grabbed her breast. As he thrust in and out, he pinched and tortured her nipples, and she moaned in delight. His thrusts grew harder and his hand moved down to her swollen clit.

“Ahhh…yes!” she cried. He teased her clit lightly and her pleasure grew to an intensity she’d never experienced.

“Oh, God, Natalia. You’re perfect,” he panted, driving into her over and over. Just when she was about to climax, he leaned over her and bit into her shoulder, pinning her while he finished inside her. “Mine.”

So did that entice you yet? How about if I give my endorsement! Next up in my review!

Blurb:  They call her The Huntress. A vampire with lethal focus, Natalia hunts rogue werewolves and kills them without mercy. She buried her heart centuries ago. Now she lives only for revenge. But when she’s forced to team up with the alpha of the northwest werewolf pack to catch a werewolf serial killer, her carefully controlled world is shattered by the passionate Cristian

Cristian can’t help be intrigued by the icy Natalia. He hasn’t been attracted to a female since his mate died decades ago. But now he vows to break that hard shell she wears and find the warm, nurturing woman inside.

Will Natalia accept Cristian’s claim on her heart even if it means sacrificing a part of who she is?

My Thoughts:

I love a good paranormal story! Only in the past year or so have I really gotten into books about vampires, shifters etc. I'm particular to shifters, especially wolves. Yum! And I enjoyed Destiny Unchained very much. This is the third book in the Shadow Destiny series, and after reading this for review, I want the others!

Who is afraid of the wolf? Certainly not Natalia. She hunts and kills them without  remorse. When it comes to Christian, however, she's got her work cut out for her. He's intrigued by this anger fueled vampire and wants to become an ally, perhaps even more.  The sexy banter and dialogue between the two sizzle right from the start. The stubborn vampire and alpha male are alike in more ways than Natalia wants to admit, and the tables keep turning on each other, catching them off guard at times.

Filled with fiery passion, jam packed suspense, and the magic we know of as love, Destiny Unchained is sure to please fans of paranormal. This is my first time reading Leia Shaw's work, and what can I say? I'm hooked.  It's fast paced, intense, and full of adventure. Oh, and let's not forget an alpha wolf male....what's not to love?

Debut author Carrie Ann Ryan and the Draw Of Paranormal

Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by today! I'm pleased to introduce you to debut author Carrie Ann Ryan! Carrie Ann has released her first book, An Alpha's Path just this month.

I now turn the attention to Carrie Anne.

First I wanted to thank Nikki for letting me stop by today!
Now, what is the draw of paranormal? Is it the fear of the unknown? The idea that in the paranormal world we can have something that we might not be able to have in our own lives?
I love paranormal, because sometimes real life has too many boundaries. I like to be able to make my own rules, find my own “mate”. In another world, you can find the things don’t exist in our world and if you have a good imagination – mold them to what you desire most.
I like the fact that in paranormal, there is a draw between the heroine and hero that that brings them together on an inherent level. Vampires bite and turn to ash in the sunlight. Werewolves change at the full moon and growl at their displeasure. Mermen swim beneath the sea. Angels fly high above us.
Countless paranormals, and yet I need to know every single one of them. What makes each one tick? Every world is different – but you can find the one you want if you look hard enough. How did the author come up with that world?
In An Alpha’s Path, I made up my own world. Yes, it’s set in our own, but what would happen if the thing that went bump in the night was actually your mate? What would you do? That’s what Melanie has to ask herself when she finds Kade, her blind date, is a werewolf. Her analytical world is ripped open and now she sees witches and werewolves – maybe more.
What would you do in that situation? What draws you to the paranormal?

Great post! I love the paranormal, too. There's so much that can happen, and I learned to expect the unexpected in paranormal. Possibilities are limitless. Thanks for your insight, Carrie Ann.

Get a glance of An Alpha's Path cover. I like it! Very eye-catching.

Carrie Ann even has an excerpt to share.  But first, here is a blurb:

Melanie is a twenty-five year old chemist who has spent all of her adult life slaving at school. With her PhD in hand, she's to start her dream job, but before she does, her friend persuades her to relax and try to live again. A blind date set up through her friends seems like the perfect solution. Melanie can take one night away from the lab and let her inner vixen out on a fixed blind date - a chance to get crazy with a perfect stranger. The gorgeous hunk she's to meet exceeds her wildest dreams – but he is more than what he appears and Melanie's analytical mind goes into overdrive.

Kade, a slightly older werewolf (at over one hundred years), needs a night way from the Pack. Too many responsibilities and one near miss with a potential mate made Kade hide in his work, the only peace he can find. His brother convinces him to meet the sexy woman for a one night of fun. What could it hurt? But when he finds this woman could be his mate, can he convince her to leave her orderly, sane world and be with him and his wolf-half, for life?

EXCERPT:

Kade could only imagine how she would look with her pale, creamy, skin against his darker,

bronze skin. Watching her lashes brush her cheeks as she glanced down at her barely touched

meal he knew he wanted to kiss any fears or anxiety she carried away.

Mate? I think it’s time to go upstairs. Don’t you?

He couldn’t agree more with his wolf. But he didn’t want to rush her. No matter what happened

tonight, they would be going upstairs – that was a guarantee. What they did once they arrived

however – was up to the woman in front of him.

“You look as if you have the same appetite as me.” At the sound of his voice, her head popped up

from whatever deep thoughts she was thinking. “What do you say we take a walk around the

property?”

“Oh, okay. I guess I am just not that hungry tonight.” She smiled sheepishly as she set down her

fork and any pretense of enjoying her food.

“Let’s go then, the check taken care of, so we can take our time tonight.”

She smiled timidly again and grabbed her wrap and black, beaded bag. He fluidly rose from his

seat and offered her his hand/

“Where would you like to walk to?” Kade, again, toned down his wolf and waited for Melanie’s

reply.

“Our room?”

Her face was still stunning with the shade of beet red it became at her surprising, yet not

unwelcome, announcement.

His wolf growled in agreement and preened for attention.

He gave her a smile that promised sinful and wicked deeds.

“That sounds like an outstanding idea, Melanie.”

Enticing excerpt. An Alpha's Path sounds like a great read!

Book Review: Dreamscape

Blurb:   Unable to deny his own translucence, Dr. Jason Bowen determines his lack of physical substance could only mean one thing—he's a ghost. Murdered more than a century before, Jason haunts his house and ponders the treachery that took his life. When Lanie O'Keefe arrives with plans to renovate her newly purchased Victorian mansion, Jason discovers, ghost or not, he's still very much a man. Despite its derelict condition and haunted reputation, Lanie couldn't be happier with her new home, but then she has no idea a spirit follows her every move throughout the day and shares her captivating warmth at night. Jason soon discovers he can travel through Lanie's dreams and finds himself reliving the days before his murder with Lanie by his side. It took one hundred and twenty years for love to find them, but there's that insurmountable little matter of Jason being dead.

My thoughts:  I am a sucker for a ghost story, especially in a romance. Dreamscape definitely caught my attention.  The fast paced, never ending action kept my interest. I had to know how this author was going to pull this one off, with the hero being a ghost and all.  At times, the book confused me, so readers may want to pay close attention so to not lose track of what's going on.  Once I got a handle on things and how the dreams and reality worked, I was well on my way to staying up all night, wanting to finish this book.

The ending surprised the heck out of me. I didn't expect it to turn out that way, but was glad to know things worked out as they did.  Dreamscape is a paranormal romantic suspense all wrapped up in one amazing book. Rose Anderson is a new author to me, and with such an impression left on me with this book, I am yearning for more paranormal romances from this talented author. Anderson's characters stuck in my head when I had to tear myself away from the book, and every time I had a distraction, the book lured me back to it. I've been looking for a great story featuring a ghost for awhile, and this one fed my addiction very well.

I recommend this book highly to any reader that wants a great story, characters that are well created and easily to relate to, a spell binding plot that grabs your attention from the spot and doesn't want to let go until the end. My advice? Don't miss Dreamscape.

You can get a copy of Dreamscape at Amazon, and other online ebook retailers.

Thank you for stopping by today, and I hope you'll check out this great book!

Until next time,

Review: Because Of The List

Blurb:  Taylor McCabe likes equations. They make sense. But one buttoned-up computer whiz plus an injured army pilot simply does not add up. It's time to get over her childish crush on Alex Worth, her brother's best friend, and find a husband. Enter The List—Taylor's ten must-have traits for a viable suitor.

But her plan goes awry when Alex insists on vetting each contender. The way he dismisses them feels like the actions of a protective boyfriend. Strangely, his attitude makes her even more attracted to him. Too bad he doesn't meet even one of her requirements….

My Thoughts:   When reading an Amy Knupp book I know I am in for am emotional, wonderful romantic story. Because of The List  was just what I imagined it would be and more.

Taylor McCabe  is a different kind of heroine. She's a bit shy, very smart, and loves equations and lists.  She's suffered a loss that also affects childhood crush and friend Alex Worth.  Alex is back in town and goes to see how Taylor is doing and comes across her list.

Alex is one of those tortured heroes. He's been through hell and back. He's seen his fair share of losses. It's time to deal with his past.

Full of heart, this contemporary does not disappoint. Ms. Knupp puts together two opposites and shows readers that anyone can fall in love despite the vast amount of differences between them. Alex and Taylor lean on each other somewhat to get through some hard times, and despite the fact that Alex doesn't match up with her list, well, Taylor can't help the stronger feelings she has that are now more than just a crush.

Anyone that loves a story about opposites attracting, well crafted characters, a touching story that lingers in the mind long after the last page is read, then I strongly suggest to get a copy of Amy Knupp's newest book!  It's another that will sit on my keeper shelf that I can turn to for comfort.

Because of The List can be found at many retailers, online and brick and mortar. Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Harlequin's website, Wal Mart...the list goes on!

Until next time,

Storm Goddess
