Sherry D. Ficklin Interview and Born of Blood Review!

This is my first author interview on my blog.  So exciting!  I am honored to be part of a blog tour with Sherry  Ficklin!

Welcome, Sherry, and congratulations on your new release! I'm honored to be interviewing you. I'm pretty new to this, but I'm very excited to have you here on Storm Goddess Book Reviews & More.

Thanks so much for having me and helping me celebrate the new book!

So, let's get down to the business. Some questions! How about it?

  1. Okay, first off- how long have you been writing?
I’ve been writing since, well, forever. I had a great creative writing teacher in high school who really got me excited about it. I’ve been writing on and off since then. I’ve been writing professionally for about five years now. It’s been amazing.

  1. When did you decide you wanted to write for publication?
Well, I don’t know if it was really a conscious decision. I had just finished the first Gods of Fate book and I wanted to sort of test the waters. I always figured that if no one wanted to publish it, I’d do it myself just to have it for my kids as they grew up. I sort of stumbled into publishing. It’s been an amazing process and I feel very fortunate to have worked and to be working with the people I am.

  1. What is your writing schedule like?
I write all day Tuesday and Thursday, and I scrape an hour or two whenever else I can. I try to be scheduled about it, but sometimes, life happens. I have four kiddos. I adapt.

  1. Plotter, or panster? I know, everyone must ask this!
Um, a little of both? I plot to the point where I at least know where/how the story will end. I try to do an outline so I have a place to refer to with specific plot points I want to hit, but most of the time my characters run all over me. By about the third chapter the outline is in the waste bin. It’s a bit crazy to think about my characters taking over, but they really do. The best made plans of mice….

  1. Other than writing, what are some of your favorite hobbies/ passtimes?
Oh, so many things… I love traveling, movies, reading, hiking, shooting. My current obsession is Doctor Who, so I’m catching up on the newest seasons of that. Oh, and I collect rubber ducks. What can I say? Random is my middle name.

  1. What genres do you love to READ?
I’ll read anything except true crime. I’m kind of a YA nerd, and fantasy too.

  1. Do you own an ereader? If so, which one? If not, do you ever plan to?
I do have a Sony reader. I really like it. I’ll use it to check out new authors, but when I fall in love with a book or series, I’ll buy the paperbacks. I do love holding paper books. Digital is cool but some things can’t be replaced!

  1. If you had an opportunity to co-author a book with someone, who would you chose and why?
Oh that’s tough. There are so many people I’d love to work with but I’m just neurotic enough that I’d probably be impossible to write with. I’m going to say J. Scott Savage. I like to stalk him at conferences. He’s very kind and funny. I think he’d be great to work with.

  1. Even though many times, Hollywood doesn't do books to movies well, what if you were to be on the team that gets to adapt a book to film- which book would you like to see go to film?

I’d love to remake The Lightning Thief and do all the Percy Jackson books. I think they really missed an opportunity to do that story justice.

  1. If you could turn one of YOUR books to a movie, which would it be?
I think that’s every writer’s secret dream, to see their books on the big screen. But I think Palmetto Moon would make a great TV show, kind of Castle meets True Blood.

  1. Who are some of your favorite authors?
I love Rick Riordan, Laurell Hamilton, Terry Goodkind, and Stacey Jay. Eclectic, I know.

  1. What do you do to celebrate release day?
I usually have a little release party with friends and family. That is after all the blog tour kickoff stuff is done. Mostly I just try to breathe. It’s such a nerve wracking experience.

  1. What advice would you give to an aspiring writer?
The biggest thing to remember is to never give up. As long as you love what you are doing and keep pushing forward, you are guaranteed to succeed.

  1. If you had a supernatural ability, what would you have?
I would love to have the ability to teleport. I hate flying commercial and I’ve discovered I no longer have the patience for anything not delivered at the speed of tweet. *Curse you Twitter*

  1. And last, but not least- if you could be a supernatural being, what would you choose?
That’s another tough question. I suppose I’d like to be a psychic like Sophie’s sister Lacy. Getting a heads up from the universe every once in a while would really come in handy. Plus, Lacy has this great ability to see things exactly as they are, it’s a rare gift and one I wish I had.

Thank you, Sherry, for an awesome interview. I loved your answers!

And now, onto Born Of Blood and my review!

Born of Blood is a witty, adventurous  novel, in the paranormal genre. The story grabbed me from the start, and what an opening scene it was!

Sophie is a young woman that has a vampire in her attic (Her ex, in fact. Yeah that makes for some interesting history, doesn't it?) Sophie's mother is always trying to set her up and see her settled down. Everyone wonders why Sophie isn't with Eric, despite the incident years ago.

Sherry's writing is fun and fast. I can tell this author takes great time and detail to create these characters, because they are very realistic readers can relate.

If you enjoy reading paranormal, then I suggest getting a copy of Born Of Blood. Though, you'll have to wait just a few more days to get your hands on a copy!

Until next time

  1. I think Blogger might be having issues. I got an email from a person who tried to comment, so I'm going to try and post her comment here in hopes that it will not eat my comment as well- Nikki

You did a great job for your first author interview!

Sherry, I love that you know how your story is going to end and then throw the outline in the trash! Nikki's review offered a great tease about Sophie and her ex, Eric, is a vampire that lives in her attic. Talk about built-in conflict.

Congratulations on your new release, and I can't wait to read Born of Blood!

  2. Don't include me in the drawing, I have my own copy. LOL! Just wanted to say, "Nice blog, Sherry!"

  3. Awesome interview. And Sherry, your story sounds amazing!!!

  6. Great interview for both of you. Gotta ask this: what do you do with all the rubber ducks you collect? Interesting hobby!
    Good luck with your career.

  7. GREAT Interview, Nikki! And I enjoyed learning about a new (to me) author; Sherry your book sounds intriguing! Wishing you great Sales!
