Review: Hereafter

Title: Hereafter
Author: Joya Fields

Publisher: Decadent Publishing

Genre: Paranormal romance

Heat Level: Hot

Reviewer: Storm Goddess

Review Rating:  3.5 LIGHTNING BOLTS

Blurb: When by-the-numbers accountant Rob Morrison, a skeptic of all things paranormal, moves into a new apartment and discovers it is haunted by the corporeal ghost of a beautiful woman, he must hastily reconsider his beliefs and revisit his painful past.

With no memory of her time on earth, Angie Barsotti doesn’t understand why she’s compelled to visit the same apartment every night as a ghost caught between two worlds. If she’s to have a chance to move on, she needs to find the missing pieces of her life and death through the man who lives there…if only he’d believe in her.

Together they struggle to find the truth about her death and stumble upon a very pleasurable way to time travel, hopeful they can prevent her death. But someone doesn’t want them to discover the truth. And if she’s human again, will she have any memories of her time as a ghost…and more importantly, will she remember the man who helped her find her way?

REVIEW: It's not every day you run into a ghost, and it's also not every day you start to have feelings for one.

Or that the ghost would have some for you.

Strange world we live in, right? Rob doesn't beleive in ghosts anymore. At one time, he did. But Angie changes his mind, and she also changes his life. There are some strange circumstances that circle Angie's death.  Plenty of speculation, and people that Rob watches closely.

Angie is ecstatic that finally, someone can see her! She's lived in a dark world for a long time, not sure how she got there and what happened to her. By some wild twist of fate, Rob is brought into her life and he plans on helping her to find out how she died.

I know this book is paranormal, and so the realm of believability can be broandeded some, but the one thing about this story that gets me is the way the pair can get Angie back. It's just, to me, on the odd side. Other than that, I enjoyed the story. I was plenty curious at how there would be a happily ever after for a ghost and a living being, but it worked out. I enjoy a good book with a ghost, and Hereafter certainly grabbed my attention. There's times the slotry falls a little flat, but I kept going because I needed to know what was going to happen!

Need a bit of a paranormal suspense mix? Give hereafter a shot. It's intriging, haunting and full surprises.

VBT review: In The Nick Of Time

Blurb: Divorced and done with her dry spell, Holly Prentice is ready to get back in the game. But with two conditions: her future mate can't be married to his career, and he has to have a couch. Nick Andreis loves his job, and his only furniture is a king-size bed. He's also single, sexy, and six years Holly's junior. Any guy this hunky and carefree can't be serious about the future.

After one spontaneous and explosive night, Holly decides that her search for Mr. Right can wait. Nick can be Mr. Right Now.

Nick has waited years for Holly. Now that she's dating again, he's determined to be the only man in her life. He wants what Holly wants: forever. Convincing her of that won't be easy, but Nick agrees - with fingers crossed behind his back - to Holly's idea that they can be bed buddies until someone serious comes along. His plan: use the time between their passionate nights to convince her that he is the one.
Will Holly's unexpected pregnancy change the rules of their games? Or can they both decide to play for keeps?

Review Rating: 4 LIGHTNING BOLTS

Review: Sometimes when you want something...or someone, you get a little more than you bargained for.

Nick has been interested in Holly for quite sometime. The time is now or never. There are definitely some obstacles between them, Holly is about six years older, and has different expectations and needs for life these days. He's young and carefree...so the desire to settle down isn't quite there yet.

Then life throws a bit of a curve ball, and decisions will have to be made.

I enjoyed this story. The characters were well rounded and i could see both Holly and Nick's side of things. The way they react, their choices, everything, all led the pair to a great conclusion, although it took a whole lot of intense moments to get there.   I loved the complexity of the characters and situations and that they really had to look deep within themselves to find what they want and need.

Great job to the author on creating a well crafted story that I enjoyed!

Author bio:

I write the kinds of books I love to read. The quirky characters in my romance novels experience angst, conflict, mostly great sex, and always get their "happily ever after." In my mainstream fiction, ordinary woman experience angst, conflict, and occasional great sex, but they also get embroiled in struggles against extraordinary odds, and I don't promise a happy ending. I also love thrillers, but I don't write those. I live in Los Angeles with my husband, son, and a whole lot of pets. When I'm not hanging out in Hollywood, I'm eating my way through Budapest.

EXCERPT:

She’d met Nick about five years ago, when he was fresh out of college and her ex was mentoring him at the network. She and Drew had sort of taken Nick under their wing. He’d been that young guy who’d come over for home cooked meals dozens of times. She’d seen movies with Nick and palled around with him while her ex husband had been working. None of that history could explain the sudden flutter in her heart. It wasn’t as if Nick were some attractive guy she’d just met for the first time at a party. He was just Nick, really. Nothing to get worked up about, she admonished herself.
Still, tonight, for reasons Holly couldn’t quite put her finger on, Nick took her breath away. Had he been this handsome and virile all these years? Had she been this lonely and shamelessly hard-up before?
Surreptitiously, she gave him a good once over. Life was obviously agreeing with him. He was all planes and angles, hard muscles, and beautiful hair. She’d always treated him like a little brother, but the feelings he inspired this evening were anything but fraternal.

Cover reveal: This is Forever

Maybe you have seen this little graphic about?

Did it get you curious? Winter is the very sexy bassist for the band 13 Shades of Red, and his book, THIS IS FOREVER will be releasing December 2013. Wanna see the cover?

Now isn’t that just sexy? From now till December if you check out some of your favorite blogs that are rocking the mini graphic on the side column, we will be giving some teasers, excerpts and interviews about the book, on the 10th of the month.
Believe me; it really is going to be a Long Hard Winter. *wink*
And now… for a sexy sneak peek at THIS IS FOREVER…
Seeing Lola after eight months was a fucking kick in the teeth. She had changed her hair, it was purple with black streaks, and she was wearing one fucker of an outfit. Platform Mary Jane’s, her signature, purple torn fishnet thigh highs with garters that ended in bows with skulls on them, micro mini in black satin with a lace trim. She had tripled up on her belts, her little baby tee molding to her torso like a second skin. It was razor cut in places, showing skin and the purple of her lace bra. Her arms warmers were knitted with little skulls on them. He was pretty sure she wasn’t wearing underwear also, the girl just loved to shock. Dare he think it was for his benefit? He wasn’t sure he even saw her, thinking he was dreaming the perfection before him.
But dreams don’t blow you off… at least his didn’t. His dreams, her especially, blew him. When dreams blew you off, those were called nightmares, and those sucked. Sucked like life was sucking right now. She had walked in with the rest of her band, greeted everyone but him, her gaze lingering a little too long on Colin, Rhys’ little brother, but then moved on as she kissed cheeks and hugged people.
He had to adjust his groin, discreetly of course, when she and Saffron hugged and snuggled. Apparently over the past several months Saffron and Lola had become quite the BFF, with Lola staying at Saffron’s place in New York when she had to go in for several shoots and meetings with her record company. Rhys had teased him about getting face timed and seeing both of them in little booty shorts and white tank tops… but he didn’t think they were that close.
And worse, he didn’t think seeing her all snuggly with Saffron would illicit the images rolling through his head. Not that Saffron wasn’t hot, but he just didn’t dig his best friend’s girl like that.  He grabbed a tootsie pop and unwrapped it, sticking the thick ball into his mouth. He watched her move from person to person, but never to him.
What. The. Fuck.
When everyone sat down, she sat at the other end, didn’t even bother to look at him. He went through dinner in a blur, his anger getting to him more and more. What the fuck was going on? He was beginning to feel like he was invisible. Maybe it was a nightmare?
When she got up and went to the bathroom, he followed, after exchanging a meaningful look with Rhys.
“So you’re just not going to say anything to me?” he said as he caught her coming out of the bathroom.
She looked at him and then sighed. “I didn’t want a public thing to happen.”
Public thing?
He cocked his head and scowled. “And what the fuck does that mean?”
She looked him up and down. “I don’t know if I’m ready to say hi like I want to.”
Winter rolled his eyes. “So you can wrap yourself around Saffron, eye Colin up like he’s a steak, which by the way he’s not even eighteen yet, eww,” he ticked off on his fingers, “Yet you can’t even just turn and wave at me?”
Lola shook her head. “It’s not what I wanted. And Colin is going to be very popular…”
“You just didn’t wanna talk to me at all?” he asked, thoroughly confused. She was the one that pushed for the tour, and by all accounts she didn’t have issue with their past. It was what gave him hope.
She moved closer and shook her head. “That’s not it.”
“Then what’s it?” he bit out, his hands clenched at his sides. Gods, only she could infuriate him like this. Fuck she smelled good. All honey and warm clover… no one smelled like Lola.
Her voice lowered. “Do you like my outfit Winter?”
He growled. Fuck yes he liked her outfit. Loved. Wanted it crumpled on the floor of his bedroom. Wanted to peel it from her slowly, kissing every inch of skin he exposed.
She reached for him, her fingers tugging him closer by the belt loops of his jeans. “Good. You’re supposed to. You don’t get anything from me Winter Tulane. No greeting, no, little wave, no explanation. Eat your heart out baby.”
She got closer, her lips just against his, a slight almost imperceptible move of the hoop through the middle of his lip and then she was gone, back towards the party, her ass shaking with a sashay that had blood rushing from every place in his body to his cock. Fuck. What the hell was going on?
“Hey Lo,” he called after her. She gave him the finger and kept walking.
Game on. Game fucking on, he thought as he followed her back into the room. Confusion didn’t even convey how he was feeling about what happened, but holy fuck the signals she was throwing off were so convoluted he didn’t know if he should fist pump for getting her so close to him or brood over her words.

With the box in my hand I silently picked my keys off the hook while I pulled back the side of my hobo bag with the other hand. I slipped the box into my bag and I heard a dragging sound and the booming voice of a man in my foyer.
“I’ll take care of this.”
“What do you want to do about his wife?”
“Find her.” He said. “Check down the hall.”
My heart burst out of my body and I almost squealed out loud. Purse on my shoulder I pushed the door open, stepped through it and prayed they’d both be down the hall and not hear the car start. For the past year I’d begged Danny to convert our carport into a garage. I’d never been so happy before this moment to have a husband who was so cheap. I slid behind the wheel and took a deep breath as I turned the key and pulled my door shut. Without warming the engine I put the car in reverse and hit the gas at full speed. Unlike in the movies my tires didn’t squeal but I struggled to maintain control of the vehicle as I went careening into the street. I slammed on the brakes and jammed the car into drive.
Two men appeared at the front of my house, one came from the front stoop and the other was standing in my carport. It seemed like slow motion even though I knew it was less than a second before I put my foot on the gas. The one in the carport reached toward his side under his sport coat and I assumed he was reaching for a gun. Would it be the same gun he’d just used to shoot a police officer? I didn’t stick around to find out and in a flash I jammed on the gas pedal. This time my tires squealed as the rubber took a second to catch up to the road.
The man who had been standing by my front door was in my rearview mirror in an instant. His arm extended. I ducked and screamed as I felt a shift in the back of my car and heard the ping of a bullet hitting what I assumed was my trunk.

Blurb

Love

Destiny

and War

Created by the First Born, The Night Touched created the bloodlines from which all modern day vampires descended. Different because of their incredible powers and advantages in the human world, The Night Touched were a special kind of vampire. However, they were believed to have died out centuries ago, and had been reduced to little more than whispers in the vampire world.

Until now.

Harper Kemp was the only modern Night Touched in existence. The reasons behind her creation were unknown and she had been abandoned during her change. Eventually she was found by Lily and Jason and taught how to handle what she had become. She learned how to blend in with the human world and even made herself in to quite the socialite of the New York City elite scene.

After a plea for help in her dreams and the dangers of a forbidden love, Harper is sent down a path to discovery; not only is she not alone, she’s about to face her worst nightmare – a devastatingly handsome slayer named Silas with a finger on her non existent pulse.

EXCERPT: I stepped into the shower and shut the door. Turning into the water, I let it run down my body as I thought. Who was this new Night Touched? Did she know about me? I had always thought I was destined to be the only Night Touched, assuming that The First Born had been bored one day and decided to make me. There were myths about the original Night Touched that hung around the vampire world, almost like bed time stories that sires told their fledglings, and were passed around over the years. No one knew what had happened to them, and it made for great campfire stories to speculate their location or if they were even still alive.

“HELP!”

I jumped back in surprise. The voice was unfamiliar and it echoed off of the glass walls to the shower. I paused for a moment to collect myself, opening the door to look for the source of the voice. “Hello?”

The lights flashed and suddenly I wasn’t in my bathroom any more, I was in some sort of lab. There were people dressed all in black hustling and bustling around, some writing on clipboards, others sitting in front of large, humming computer stations. A girl was stripped down to next to nothing, tied down with thick straps, and lit by a spotlight over her. IV’s were stuck in her arms and electrodes were attached to her head. She was looking right at me, tears pouring down her face.

“Help me,” she whispered.

There was another flash and I was back in my bathroom, clinging to the side of the shower. The mark on my chest was glowing brightly and a pain shot through me. I stumbled to turn the water off, and grab my towel. Wrapping it around me, I ran into my room and fumbled around on my desk for a piece of paper and a pencil.

The image seemed to flow out of me and on to the page, like my hand was being controlled by some unseen force. The computer set up, the shadow figures, and that girl. The only other Night Touched in existence and they had her strapped to a table, poking and prodding her like some kind of science experiment. I wrote down sets of numbers over her face. When I finished, it looked like some kind of strange modern art piece.

I sat back and stared at it. The numbers were in sets of two:

40.753369,-73.977023, 40.753369,-73.977023,40.753369,-73.977023

I looked at the string of numbers, dumbfounded. “What the hell is this?”

“Harper?” Lily slowly opened my door and peeked in. “Your clutch has been vibrating.”

“Oh, thanks.” I mumbled over my shoulder. “Hey, while you’re here, look at this.”

She walked over to me, setting my clutch next to me and looking over my shoulder. I could feel her confusion as she paused, trying to figure out what exactly she was looking at. “It’s… lovely?”

“That’s not why I need you to look at it. This came to me in the shower.” I set it down and turned towards her. “I had… Well, I had a vision.”

“Harper, don’t kid. You know that we don’t have those sorts of things. Vampires with vision are the stuff of fairy tales,” she scoffed.

“I am the stuff of fairy tales, Lily. Night Touched hadn’t been around for thousands of years, they became ghost stories and yet here I am! She tried to show me where she is.”

Reviews
“CELINE is the first book in the Night Touched Chronicles. This is a series I’m very excited about because the author takes us back to the roots of vampires from old horror movies, while still adding a modern twist. Provan's vampires are sophisticated, intelligent, and calculating. But, make no mistake--there is nothing tame or vegetarian about these vampires, particularly the Night Touched … This fast-paced story is full of tension, passion, and surprises. Once I began reading, I couldn’t stop and read it within a matter of a few hours. This is easily one of the most engaging vampire stories I've read in a long time and I would recommend it to both old-school vampire fans and to Twilight lovers alike.”--triciaATW (Amazon)

“I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review. I enjoyed this book from the very beginning. The cover is stunning! This book had a way about it. It was an easy read because it was action packed and kept the reader interested. I liked how there are two types of vampires and I found the background about each type very interesting. I also liked how the author incorporated other supernatural beings, but they didn't take away from the vampires. … All in all, this was a great start to the trilogy. I can’t wait to read more and find out where the story leads. I would recommend this book to vampire lovers. I look forward to the rest of the series.”--Justine (Goodreads)

Blurb Tour: Homerun

Homerun
By: Ruth Roberts

Blurb:
Cynthiana, beautiful, intelligent, and by all appearances, a spoiled socialite, finds herself as chair of the Inner City Youth League Charity Gala. Her Co-Chair, Roberto Luque, is Major League Baseball’s newest playboy from the Domincan Republic. Far from being in the League of men her parents expect her to choose from, which is just fine with her since she has sworn off playboys. But, as they work together she discovers his devotion to the inner city children and wonders if there is more to him than his playboy reputation. Will she break her no playboy rule long enough to find out?
Roberto fought his way into the Majors. Now, a successful pitcher for the Texas Rangers, he is living the life he always dreamed of. Until he faces off with a bad-tempered, blue-eyed, red head that is not his type. So, why is he drawn to her? The Charity Gala gives him a chance to find out. What he finds beneath that socialite veneer captivates him, heart and soul.
When her powerful father threatens to tear them apart, destroying not only their love, but also Roberto’s hard won career, will he be willing to give it all up for love?

Excerpt:
Copyright © 2012 Ruth Roberts
How could she have been talked into this? She was in way over her head. Cynthiana Davenport did not plan fundraiser Gala’s, she attended them. So how is it that she was now head of the planning committee? And for baseball of all things. She didn’t even like baseball, much less know anything about it. So what if her best friend had married a hunky major league baseball player last year. Just because Stacy had to learn about the sport didn’t mean she did. She was going to call her right now and tell her the deal was off. Someone else would have to take her place.
Cynthiana dug her phone out of her purse and was about to hit speed dial when she sighed in resignation and threw it back into her purse. Stacy was seven months pregnant with twins and on total bed rest. She couldn’t back out, Stacy didn’t need that kind of stress. The Gala was only a month away and everything was practically done. It would be a piece of cake. She could do this. Besides, it was only a big party and if there was one thing she was good at it was throwing parties. Sure, this one was a little larger than she was used to but hey, how much trouble could five hundred wealthy people and athletes be?
Not nearly as much trouble as managing her growing feelings for one very gorgeous, very charming baseball player with deep brown eyes and a killer smile who just happened to be her right hand on the planning committee. Roberto Luque. If she could just ignore his adorable dimples she might get through the next few hours. Roberto was a playboy and she didn’t date playboys. Ever. So she would just have to keep her feelings under tight control until the night was over. She had managed to do just that every time they had seen each other over the past year. Admittedly, it had been getting harder and harder, especially since he seemed to be stepping up the charm. A man like Roberto knew very well when a woman was attracted to him, but she was determined not to be one of them. So far she had been safe by provoking some sort of argument with him any time they were together, that usually cooled things down, but she hadn’t been able to do that since they started working together on the Gala. Thankfully they wouldn’t be alone, the rest of the committee would be there too. Which was a good thing since they were meeting at her house. Heaven only knew what would happen if the two of them were alone in a house together. Spontaneous combustion came to mind.
Her two story, red brick house on twenty-five acres in a small Dallas suburb gave her the privacy of having a slice of country while still close to the city. Deciding they would be more comfortable working in the living room she finished laying out the last of the Chinese food boxes on the coffee table. The door bell rang. Refusing to glance in the mirror by the door, she opened it to find Roberto. Just Roberto. It was dangerous to womankind for one man to be so handsome. That mischievous look in his dark eyes, a touch of humor on his full lips, dark tendrils of hair curled on his forehead and at his nape. How is it that the sight of him made her feel light headed? Get a grip girl, he’s only a man.
“Hi Princesa. I brought the wine and the guest lists as you ordered.”
“I don’t order, I request.” Defensive mode was her method of survival around him. She stepped back and let him in.
Roberto stood just inside and surveyed her house. Lots of windows let in plenty of sunlight. Sheer red curtains over white slatted blinds complemented the white carpeting and black leather sectional with red and white throw pillows scattered over it. Why was it so important that he like her home?
With a smile and a shake of his head Roberto said, “Nice. It suits you. Fiery yet warm. By the way, Jennifer and Raquel won’t be able to make it tonight.” He set the wine bottle on the table next to the wine glasses and the manila folder containing the guest lists on the sofa.
So much for her well laid plans. “Why not? We have a lot to do tonight, and why didn’t they call me?” She wanted to stomp her foot like a child. Fortunately, she was able to control that urge. Unfortunately her face felt as hot as stoked fire. Darn, why did she have such pale skin? Was it anger or the thought of being alone with him? Anger, definitely anger.
“Because they called me,” Roberto replied. “Between the two of us we can get everything done. Not to worry Princesa, hard work is not hazardous to your health.”
“I know that Roberto. Why do you insist on thinking I haven’t worked a day in my life?”
“I never said that. Now let’s eat, I’m starving.”
The man was impossible. Maybe she’d just send him home and do all the work herself. The idea had merit. She plopped down on the sofa as far away from him as possible and still reach the food. She ignored his knowing smile and shake of his head as she picked up a box of her favorite sweet and sour pork. Who cared if he thought she was a chicken for wanting to keep distance between them.
He poured them each a glass of wine and sat down next to her. He scooted closer to her as he handed her a glass. Now he seemed to ignore her scowl as he took a sip of wine, set down his glass and chose his own box.
“You’re always starving,” she said a few bites later, “it must be some sort of rule for athletes that they can eat whatever they want and still look great.”
“You think I look great?”
Darn! Why did she have to say something to make him smile? There were those dimples again. Heat started creeping up her neck and face, the telltale signs of a blush coming on. Be more careful with your words!
“All athletes look great, it’s not just you. Don’t let your head get too big, if it gets any bigger we won’t both fit on the sofa, I’ll find myself on the floor.”
He put his arm around her shoulders and pulled her to his side. “Don’t worry, there will always be a place for you by my side.”
His teasing tone turned serious causing her to look up at him. He stared down at her, his expression unreadable. Was he joking? Was he serious? She couldn’t tell and her heart was doing funny little flip flops, his fingers stroking seductively up and down her arm weren’t helping either.
