VBT: The Night Belongs to Fireman

Welcome to my stop on The Night Belongs to Fireman tour! I have an interview with the author, Jennifer Bernard, a review, and info on the book!

Tell me about yourself, and your writing.

I live in Alaska, literally on the edge of wilderness, with my husband and two stepdaughters. I moved here from Los Angeles – quite a dramatic life change. I write fun, sexy contemporary romance for Avon Books, my first series being the Bachelor Firemen of San Gabriel.

How long have you been writing? How many published books do you have, and what genres?

I’ve been writing romance for about seven years, but my first book was published in 2012. It’s been a fast ride since then – my sixth book is about to come out, along with my 3rd novella. They’re all part of my fireman series, but I’m now working on a new series about a minor league baseball team in Texas. It’s a fun change!

Do you write in multiple genres or just one? If just one, do you ever consider straying outside your genre?

I do also write erotic romance under another name, so I have played with different genres. I’m intrigued by New Adult and one of my favorite genres to read is Young Adult. My very first, never-to- see-the-light-of-day manuscript was actually paranormal, which made me decide very firmly that it’s not my genre. However, after writing so many fun contemporaries, I’m a little tempted to try a really dark dystopian story. Something completely different!

Are you a plotter or do you write from the seat of your pants?

Definitely a plotter. I work from an outline, but I’m not a slave to it. If something isn’t working, I’ll go back and rework the outline. And things inevitably change as I go. But without that outline, I’d probably have a panic attack. I need some kind of structure so I can see my way.

What is a typical writing day like for you?

I don’t really have a typical day, except that I like to get my writing done by 4 or so, because after that my brain slows down too much. I’m very strict about my word count. Whatever my goal is, I make sure I get it done – or if something comes up that makes it impossible, that I have a clear plan to make up for it another time. If I didn’t have those daily goals, it would be difficult to be productive. Again, I really need structure, or my life slides into chaos.

Who do you love to read? Favorite authors, favorite books?

I have so many! I adore Lisa Kleypas, Sherry Thomas, Eloisa James, Kristan Higgins, Molly O’Keefe, Nora Roberts, Susan Elizabeth Phillips. I love reading YA, and thought Hunger Games was brilliant.

What is something you'd like to accomplish in your writing career next year?

Next year is a big year for me because I’m starting a new series. Up to this point, people have known me only as the “fireman” writer. But as I mentioned, my next book is about a minor league baseball team, and I’m having a blast writing it. So by this time next year, maybe my identity will have expanded to “you know, the one who writes about baseball players.”

If you could have one paranormal ability, what would it be?

Teleportation would be awesome. I love to see new parts of the world, but the getting there and back is so time-consuming. If I could twitch my nose and be somewhere else, well, I’d probably be on a beach in Fiji right now.

If you could keep a mythical/ paranormal creature as a pet, what would you have?

A Pegasus, what a beautiful ride that would be. I wouldn’t need teleportation powers if I had a Pegasus.

Tell us a little about your latest release.

The Night Belongs to Fireman is the 6th and last full-length book in the Bachelor Firemen series. It’s about Fred Breen, who rescues a girl from a car crash who turns out to be a tech billionaire’s daughter. When said billionaire convinces Fred to moonlight as an extra bodyguard, things get even more  interesting.

What is something that you absolutely can't live without? (Other than family members)

Most definitely my laptop. I have recurring nightmares about leaving my laptop on an airplane, or in a bathroom. I like to know where it is at all times. It’s strange and honestly, a little neurotic.

Could you ever co author a book with someone? If so, who would you choose, and what would you write?

I used to co-write screenplays with a friend, and I always compared it to a kind of marriage. Co-writing is challenging, and I’m not sure I’d attempt it with anyone else. It might feel like cheating!

If you could spend a day with anyone from history, dead or alive, who would it be, and what would you do? What would you ask them?

Nelson Mandela. I’d like to know what spiritual experience he went through in prison that enabled him to be so forgiving.

What are some of your other hobbies outside of writing?

I love yoga, and I love to swim. Reading, of course. I’ve recently gotten back into knitting, which I used to love. Living in Alaska requires a certain amount of work – shoveling snow, chopping wood, so I don’t have a lot of time for hobbies. Unless you count spending massive amounts of time on Facebook and Twitter a hobby.

What is something you've always wanted to do, but haven't done yet. Why not?

I’d love to go hiking across one of the glaciers across our bay. But I haven’t done it because I’m terrified of falling into a crevasse. A very reasonable fear, by the way.

If you were on the staff to have a book adapted to movie, what would you pick?

I’m reading Sherry Thomas’ My Beautiful Enemy right now, and I think it would make an amazing movie. Very visual, with fascinating characters. The prequel, The Hidden Blade, is just as wonderful; I’d combine them into one movie.

What is a talent you wish you had, but don't?

So many! I wish I could sing, I wish I could sit down at a piano and bang out a tune, I wish I could dance like Beyonce.

             Favorite color?

Irridescent teal with a hint of silver.

Weather: Hot or cold?

Hot!! I know that sounds crazy, since I live in Alaska. But I’m a warm-temperature girl all the way. That’s why we spend part of the winter in Hawaii. I’d go crazy otherwise.

Favorite place to read?

I love curling up in my favorite leather armchair in our kitchen. In fact, I’m in it as I write these words. So comfy!!

Favorite meal

This might sound strange: Salad followed by ice cream. I’m actually quite obsessed by greens, it’s the one form of food I couldn’t do without. And they make me feel so virtuous that I can really enjoy that ice cream for dessert.

Favorite non-alcoholic drink.

Tea. I drink it constantly. There’s a kind of green tea called yerba mate that has just the right amount of caffeine to get my brain going without any jitteriness.. I love it.

If you could travel anywhere and do anything, no limits or money holding you back, where would you go?

Bali. I’ve always wanted to travel there, and never have. I will do it someday, money or no. Maybe I’ll hitch a ride on a sailboat to get there. Or I can always teleport on my pet Pegasus!

Thank you so much for having me!

Review Rating: 4 LIGHTNING BOLTS

Review:  I've been following the Bachelor Firemen series from the beginning and have enjoyed each and every story. They're full of witty dialog, lovable characters, and sizzling tension. This story, we get Fred's story. He's the sweet one and there's so many sides to him. He's full of joking around, he's funny and flat out sexy! Love him.

Rachel is our heroine and she's got a little bit of trauma in her history, but she's trying to move past it. I love her with Fred, even if at times they're a tad like fire and gasoline, but man when they give in, WHEW! Hot!

I had a blast with this story. It kept me smiling, I laughed, I was frustrated, and I was at the edge of my seat in some parts with the suspense. If you haven't tried this series I seriously have to question you- WHY NOT?

Looking forward to more, MUCH more from this author!

  2. Great interview! I LOVE this series and this was an awesome read. I'm actually a little sad to see it ending. I'm hoping that Jennifer Bernard will occasionally post an "update" or ss around Christmas or sometime to update us on how the firemen are doing.
