On the Rocks
By: Erin Duffy
Releasing April 22nd, 2014

Blurb
A heartwarming novel about friendship, family, and finding love in the Facebook Age-the perils, pitfalls, and dubious pleasures of being a modern young single woman-from Erin Duffy, the author of Bond Girl

Six months ago, Abby's life fell apart for all the world to see. Her longtime boyfriend-turned-fiancé, Ben, unceremoniously dumped her-on Facebook-while she was trying on dresses for the big day.

When the usual remedies-pints of Ben & Jerry's, sweatpants, and a comfy couch-fail to work their magic, her best friend, Grace, devises a plan to get Abby back on her game. She and Abby are going to spend the summer in Newport, in a quaint cottage by the sea, enjoying cool breezes, cocktails, and a crowd of gorgeous men.

But no matter how far away they go, Abby and Grace discover that in the era of social media-when everyone is preserving every little detail of their lives online-there is no real escape. Dating has never been easy. But now that the rules are more blurred than ever, how will they find true love? And even if they do, can romance stand a chance when a girl's every word and move can go viral with a single click?

Review Rating: 3 LIGHTNING BOLTS

Review: Facebook, or really any social media seems to be the place to air out your dirty laundry. It's like a big drama play. Who needs TV when we can log into Facebook and see people's lives, right?  Some check statuses and get upset if they don't get  like or comment, blah blah blah.

So, here's a scenario. You're trying on a wedding dress for your big day. Your best friend happens to see a Facebook update from your fiance...Oops, my bad. I mean, ex, because he just changed his relationship to single.

That wedding dress you're wearing?

FORGET IT!!

On the Rocks starts off with this scenario. Yes, it's pretty cliche, the woman getting ready to  marry the love of her life and something happens. Nothing wrong with that, but it's a basic book starter. Still, I felt for Abby. She had no idea. She was pretty much blindsided by Ben's change of heart.  And then to top it off, he offers no real explanation. I wanted to throttle him! Dumb butt man!!! Grr! Yes, can you tell he irritates me?

I felt for Abby, even though at times she comes across as annoying. Okay, fine I get that. She's just gone through a breakup, she's reeling from that. Wallowing a bit in a pity party, and when her friends try to coax her into getting back in the dating game, she's hesitant. She's not always the nicest to guys.  Still, I get that too because I've gone through what I call the "male hating stage"  There just comes a time you get fed up and sometimes feelings come to you that you may or may not like, but they're there anyway.

Overall, On the Rocks is a pretty good read. I connected, and yet in some instances, I didn't. The characters definitely were well crafted. I may not have always liked them, but I don't always like some people all the time in real life. So the characterization was good.  The story at times dragged. Too much inner though or narrative, not enough action or dialog.  However, the story made me feel and that's what propelled me through it. I needed to see a good ending for Abby after all she's felt and gone through.  It's a story of moving on, friendships, and a journey to get back to who you were before falling in love with Mr. Wrong.
