Night
Games

The
moment Grey Kelleher locks eyes with All-Star shortstop Chase
Whitfield, she's a goner. For years, she's watched him play on TV,
and now she's gazing at his hard, lean body across a bar in her
hometown.
Grey's
crush on Chase goes all the way back to his rookie season. So when
she approaches him for an autograph, she's startled by what a jerk he
can be.
Chase
is no mood to humor his fans, even one as alluring as Grey. He's in
the last year of his contract and stuck having to prove himself on a
minor league team. He's only there to rehab an injury, nothing more.
But
when Grey tells him off, Chase realizes her fiery spirit may be just
the distraction he needs to take his mind off not being in the
majors. His heart is safe. No one's going to break his streak as
baseball's most eligible bachelor. Not even someone as irresistible
as Grey.

Is Chase Whitfield really that different from other New Adult leading men?
I never imagined when I brought Chase to life in NIGHT GAMES that he would elicit such a visceral response from female readers. To me, he's a redeemable bad boy whose actions are par for the course. However, readers tend to vehemently disagree with me on that. Some of them don't think he's worth saving, in fact they'd like to strangle him with their bare hands instead.
I've read several New Adult novels where the guy does some pretty contemptible things. There's one who has sex with another woman knowing the girl he really wants is watching him get it on with someone else. There's another who uses a woman, having her go down on him as the girl he hit it off with the night before stumbles across them. I could go on, but I think it's fair to say that male characters in this genre are not expected to be altar boys. They do things a lot of us wouldn't put up with in real life, yet we're able to forgive them in fiction as long as they make it up to us in the guise of the girl we're all rooting for.
And that brings me to Grey. I think many of you feel protective of her when it comes to Chase, and that makes me feel good. You see qualities that you admire in her and want Chase to appreciate them too. It takes Chase a while to see the light, but when he does I hope it makes for a worthwhile reading experience for all you romance lovers out there.
Chase may be a hard guy to like in the beginning, but he grows on you. He's led a privileged, pampered existence for most of his adult life, so bear with him if he doesn't like readers telling him no. Sometimes, I admit he needs to be put in his place, and boy, am I glad there are readers around who are ready to do just that.

Review: Let's say you had a crush. A celebrity crush, and one day, he comes to down and you get a chance to be up close. What happens when your crush turns out to be kind of a jerk, and you have a chance to let him know EXACTLY what you think?
Night Games is a story about Chase and Grey. Chase is in his last year of a contract, he's coming back from an injury and frankly, he's just plain tired. He'd not looking to make anyone happy, he's not looking to do anything but get done. He's about had enough.
Chase is a character that has to grow on you. For me, even in the end, I'm still on the fence. I get his frustration to a point, but he just rubbed me the wrong way. I couldn't connect. I also felt like I was on the outside...like there just wasn't enough growth or depth.
Grey, well..I didn't connect to her instantly either. I like her fierceness and attitude, but there was just something lacking for me. In the end, she was easier to connect with.
The story line is pretty good. It moves at a good pace, the dialog has it's funny moments, and I was invested enough in the story. Night Games has a lot of surprises, too. Overall, it's a good read, I just wish I could have connected better with the leading characters.

Info
Collette
West grew up as somewhat of a jock-nerd hybrid. Entering the world
three weeks premature, her dad nearly missed her birth because he had
seats behind the dugout for a sold-out, highly-anticipated match-up
between two of baseball's biggest rivals. Not to be outdone, her
book-loving mom taught her how to read by the time she was three. A
love of the game coupled with an appreciation for the written word
were instilled in Collette's impressionable brain from a young age.
No wonder her characters believe in the philosophy: sports + romance
= a little slice of heaven.
Splitting
her time between the Pocono Mountains and Manhattan, Collette
indulges her inner fangirl by going to as many games as she can from
hockey to baseball and downloading every sports romance novel in
existence onto her iPad. When she's not clicking away on her laptop,
she enjoys walking her dog in Central Park, satisfying her caffeine
craving at the Starbucks on Broadway and keeping an eye out for Mr.
Right. But above all, she loves dishing with her readers. Email her
