VBT: Interview with Bronwen Evans

Please help me welcome Bronwen Evans to the blog today for an interview!

Tell me about yourself, and your writing.

How long have you been writing? How many published books do you have, and what genres?

Hi, ladies – waving from New Zealand. I’m a kiwi, grew up in NZ but did live overseas for several years. I got into writing because I had so many stories in my head that it got a bit crowded. I love letting the characters come forth and tell me about their lives.

I have been writing seriously since 2009. I have eight books published, seven Regency historical romances and one contemporary romance.

Do you write in multiple genres or just one? If just one, do you ever consider straying outside your genre?

I guess I answered this question already. I write across two genres. My mother always told me not to put all my eggs in one basket! Plus, I love a good contemporary romance.

Are you a plotter or do you write from the seat of your pants?
I’m a plotter but I let the characters take me where they want to go and re-plot through the book.

What is a typical writing day like for you?
Because I live in NZ, when I wake at about 6am, it’s already lunchtime in the USA. So, I normally answer my emails and do some social media.  Then I write for a couple of hours, then go for a walk, then write for another few hours. Late in the afternoon I plan my marketing and blogs etc

Who do you love to read? Favorite authors, favorite books?
I read and read and read. I love Regency historical (obviously), Highland historical, paranormal and contemporary and a bit of erotic. I have read across almost every genre and I’ve found great new authors.
Favorite authors – I have so many. Jennifer Ashley, Shana Galen, Anna Campbell, Wendy Vella, Margaret Mallory, Gracie O’Neil, Natalie Anderson etc

What is something you'd like to accomplish in your writing career next year?
Over 2014 I like to learn how to speed up my writing process. I’m not the fastest writer and yet I have so many stories to tell! I’m also learning to dictate my stories and get someone else to type them. This works well as you speak much faster than you type. Before you mention tools like Dragon Naturally Speaking, let me tell you, they can’t understand a kiwi accent.

Tell us a little about your latest release.

A Kiss of Lies started as a standalone book, four years ago, when I first began writing. It sat in my draw for about 3 years but something about my hero, Christian Trent, Earl of Markham, always drew me back to the story. Then I looked at Christian’s friends and the idea of having a series with an overarching villain was born.

The book is fundamentally about two wounded souls, the hero Christian, and the heroine Sarah Cooper, both of whom have been scared by life. It’s their journey to recovery—both emotionally and physically—and how love heals all.

Christian, accused of rape has been shanghaied to York, Canada. Sarah, a woman on the run escapes from West Virginia and also ends up in York, Canada. Sarah, remembering Christian from her past life in England, applies for a job in Christian’s household, looking after his new ward, Lily, and awakens a longing in Christian for something he long thought out of reach—love.

Suddenly, Christian, a man badly burned at Waterloo, a man who has given up on the world, and who feels sorry for himself, recognizes a kindred spirit in the sad and frightened Sarah. He becomes determined to help her, recognizing that by doing so, he’ll have something to continue living for, and just maybe, he’ll find more...

Both of them have enemies to combat, but with courage, determination and honor, loves wins the day.

What is something that you absolutely can't live without? (Other than family members)
My kindle! And a cup of tea.

Could you ever co author a book with someone? If so, who would you choose, and what would you write?
Oh, good question. I’m always happy to try anything. I’d love to write a Regency romance with Julia London. I love her tortured heroes.

If you could spend a day with anyone from history, dead or alive, who would it be, and what would you do? What would you ask them?
It has to be Oscar Wilde. I love his wit and the plays he wrote – the characterization was extraordinary.

What are some of your other hobbies outside of writing?
I love reading. I’m a huge theatre goer. I play bridge and golf.

What is something you've always wanted to do, but haven't done yet. Why not?

I’d love to write a screenplay for a TV series. Not sure about what yet but I have some ideas….

If you were on the staff to have a book adapted to movie, what would you pick?

Easy – JR Ward’s The Black Dagger Brotherhood. There’s a world I’d love to visit. I have read 5 of the series so far since Christmas. Yes, I’m slow. I’ve only just found her books. I do think Vampire stories move well into TV or big screen.

What is a talent you wish you had, but don't?
Oscar Wilde’s wit.

Pink

Weather: Hot or cold?
How about warm 25C is perfect.

Favorite non-alcoholic drink.

If you could travel anywhere and do anything, no limits or money holding you back, where would you go?

I’ve done masses of travelling, just about everywhere! But I’d love to go back to Russia to see how much it has changed since my visit in 1989. Has live improved for the people. When I was there it was pretty dire, long queues for food, nothing in the stores, 18 month wait to have a broken window replaced etc.

Thank so much for having me! A Kiss of Lies takes Christian and Sarah from England to North America to the Caribbean. Tell me what place you’d most like to visit and why? Win a copy of INVITATION TO SCANDAL in book or ebook format.

Blurb

In Bronwen Evans’s Loveswept debut, a pair of damaged souls ignite each other’s deepest passions—even as they tempt fate by deceiving the world.
Desperate to escape her abusive past, Sarah Cooper disguises herself as a governess in the employ of Christian Trent, Earl of Markham, the man who, long ago, she fantasized about marrying. Despite the battle scars that mar his face, Sarah finds being near Christian rekindles her infatuation. A governess, however, has no business in the arms of an earl, and as she accompanies Christian on his voyage home, Sarah must resist her intense desires—or risk revealing her dangerous secrets.
One of the renowned Libertine Scholars, Christian Trent once enjoyed the company of any woman he chose. But that was before the horrors of Waterloo, his wrongful conviction of a hideous crime, and his forcible removal from England. Far from home and the resources he once had, Christian believes the life he knew—and any chance of happiness—is over . . . until his ward’s governess sparks his heart back to life, and makes him remember the man he used to be. Now Christian is determined to return to England, regain his honor, and win the heart of the woman he has come to love.

  1. I'd love to go to New Zealand for a very geeky reason.... I'd love to see the gorgeous places where the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Trilogy were filmed. :-D

I'd love to travel Great Briton and Europe for all the historical places as well. :-)
