Inspired
by Grimm’s fairy tales, Lex Keating takes a contemporary, quirky
twist on the old legend of The Seven Swans, removing the magic, and
adding memorable characters.
Once upon a time – better known as “now” - Gabriel Pritz reigns as king of his high school. Easy grades, perfect baseball season, a pretty date for prom—he's coasting into a golden future. Until his parents demand he cook dinner once a week. Caught between kitchen fires and ballpark withdrawal, Gabe is thrown into Tam Swann's orbit. Hostile, friendless, and stubborn, she's exactly the sort of person he'd prefer to avoid.
Tam's sphere of influence expands beyond Gabe's sad domestic skills, rapidly invading everything from his favorite game to parts of his soul he didn't know existed. It's uncomfortable, it's hard work, it's...making him a better man. And that's just what she does to people she doesn't like. The better he gets to know her, the more he has to face the truth: this sharp, heart-breaking outcast is worth fighting for. How many families, fairy tales, and felons will he go through to ride to the rescue of the bravest person he's ever met?
Review Rating: 4 LIGHTNING BOLTS
Review: This life is no fairy tale...even as good as it gets, Gabe is soon going to learn that things can change. Including himself, and his outlook.
I love that the author makes a contemporary spin on an old fairy tale...and let me say it was nicely done! I found myself very engaged in the story and ti's characters. Gabe, he's the kind of guy in high school everyone wants to know. Good looks, good grades, into sports. Things are changing in his home life and suddenly he's got to "grow up" a little bit. Oh boy, does that cause some interesting turn of events. So he makes a deal with a girl who is so far opposite of him it's not even funny. Tam is quiet, reserved and not very friendly. She keeps herself invisible.
Things are a changin' though...oh, but they are. Gabe finds that he's intrigued by this quiet withdrawn girl and the more time he spends with her, the more he wants to know. But there are major complications in Tam's life that Gabe is learning about.
I love a good story where a character goes through a major change due to feelings for someone else. That's exactly what happened here. The book is full of emotion, humor, and characters that I won't soon forget. The Silent Swan is a well done book and I'm definitely intrigued by what else this author has to offer.
