Secrets of the Sky VBT

Welcome to my stop on the Secrets of the Sky blog tour!I hope you'll leave a comment and let us know you were here!

Today, I get to put Jaye Shields in the HOT SEAT! Which means I ask the questions, she gives the answers. Who is ready? I sure am...! :)

Hi Jaye! Thanks for being here. Thank you also, for being a good sport about my questions.

tell me about yourself, and your writing.
My name is Jaye, born and raised in Seattle before I moved and graduated from San Francisco State University. I’m now living in a small tourist town in Oregon. So far it feels like a constant Vacay. I’m digging it. I write flaming hot novellas, sensual romances, and right now I’m working on a sweet contemporary. Although honestly I’m fighting the urge to make it naughty!

How long have you been writing? How many published books do you have, and what genres?
I’ve been writing forever, but never got serious and actually wrote a full-length novel until 2011 when I was a junior in college. In 2012 I got my first 6 contracts. My Sex Demons Trilogy from Beachwalk Press debuted as well as the first from my Immortals in Alameda series from Crimson Romance. I’m very excited!

Do you write in multiple genres or just one? If just one, do you ever consider straying outside your genre?
Paranormal is my favorite, but I’m currently writing my first contemporary. I’ve also written a paranormal historical that I’m planning on submitting soon.

Are you a plotter or do you write from the seat of your pants?
Both :) Generally I plot the characters and the rest just flows from there.

What is a typical writing day like for you?
It’s always changing depending on my other job. As a flight attendant I could be writing or editing in a different city every day. Or if I’m at home, I wake up and walk to my local coffee shop and hang there for a couple hours. When I write, I try to do at least 2k in a sitting.

Who do you love to read? Favorite authors, favorite books?

I adore Kresley Cole and JR Ward. I usually read some Kenyon and Showalter too. My all-time favorite romance novel might be the Reef by Nora Roberts though, I read it when I was 13 and fell in love.

What is something you'd like to accomplish in your writing career next year?

I’ve only ever written paranormals, so I’m challenging myself to write a contemporary. I’d love to see it finished and published in 2013.

If you could have one paranormal ability, what would it be?

The power of persuasion like the Jedi knights or the vampires in True Blood. I’d use it for the greater good and tell everyone in the world to just get along!

If you could keep a mythical/ paranormal creature as a pet, what would you have?
A Pegasus. No doubt :) I love to fly and I love horses so what could be more magical?

Tell us a little about your latest release.

In February I have two releases, Secrets of the Sky, the next book in my Immortals in Alameda trilogy, and Addictions of a Sex Demon, the third book in my Sex Demons trilogy. Both of these stories have something in common, two heroines that I am completely in love with. Sparrow (from Secrets of the Sky) and Sephina (from Addictions of a Sex Demon) are two of my favorite heroines. They’re both flawed, and yet they maintain and incredible spirit and sense of humor. Not only that, but they are both completely in love, and would do anything for their families, and the men that swoop into their lives. I have a feeling that readers will fall in love with both of these ladies.

What is something that you absolutely can't live without? (Other than family members)
Being able to travel. I get the itch and it drives me nuts! France, Italy, Ireland and Mexico are some of my favorite destinations.

Could you ever co author a book with someone? If so, who would you choose, and what would you write?
I think it would be fun to coauthor a book with one of my favorite authors like Kresley Cole or JR Ward. I’ve heard Sherrylon Kenyon is a lot of fun so I wouldn’t mind crashing her party either.

If you could spend a day with anyone from history, dead or alive, who would it be, and what would you do? What would you ask them?

That’s a hard question. Probably Marie Antoinette. I’ve read so many biographies and I’d really love to get to know the real her and set the story straight.

What are some of your other hobbies outside of writing?

Travel and just adventuring out and about, whether in cities or the middle of nowhere. I love going someplace new. I also enjoy photography and playing guitar.

What is something you've always wanted to do, but haven't done yet. Why not?

Ride in a hot air balloon. It’s expensive!

If you were on the staff to have a book adapted to movie, what would you pick?

My book, Secrets of the Fog!

What is a talent you wish you had, but don't?

Singing. I do it when I play guitar, but it’s not pretty, lol.

             Favorite color?
Red
Weather: Hot or cold?
Cold
Favorite place to read?
Tulum, Mexico
Favorite meal
Steak and mashed potatos :)
Favorite non-alcoholic drink.
Banana milkshake
If you could travel anywhere and do anything, no limits or money holding you back, where would you go?

I’m lucky because my job does enable me to travel for free so I do a ton of traveling. One place I haven’t been yet though is the ruins of Machu Pichu. I’d love to go there and I will some day!

Thanks so much for having me, it’s been fun!

XOXO Jaye

Blurb
Secrets of the Sky (Paranormal Romance, Sensual)
When Sparrow Reed is forced into a world of demons and warfare, two good things come out of it: Immortality, and Rowen. Hottest. Conquest. Ever.
Rowen is an immortal knight charged with guarding the realm of portal travel. He never thought he’d fall for a young mortal with a back full of tattoos and a Wiccan enchantment. But he did. And according to a soothsayer, it will be her demise.
When his rejection sends Sparrow into the arms of a dangerous rebel, Rowen must decide which is more dangerous, the oracles grim warning, or forsaking his hearts one desire.
Or,
Sparrow Reed might look like an angel, but she’s a witch with a back full of enchanted tattoos and she’s not afraid to use them. When her best friend’s life is threatened by an evil Goddess, Sparrow joins an epic battle against the demons sent to destroy her home. She never realized that the night she almost died, her life would truly begin.
Rowen Aerion of the Knights of the Fog was sent to the human realm to tip the balance in an unfair fight. But when he arrives on Alcatraz Island to aid the mortal humans, he sees an angel fighting demons. But she’s not an angel, she’s human. And according to a soothsayer, his love for her will mean her demise.
Sparrow is thrust into a world she never imagined existed, yet nothing thrills her like the handsome warrior who refuses her seduction. When Rowen’s rejection sends Sparrow into the arms of a dangerous rebel, Rowen must decide which is more dangerous, the oracle’s grim warning, or forsaking his heart’s sole desire.

Excerpt
Rowen appeared beside Sodor in the doorway. Flecks of blood dotted his face, but
Sparrow barely noticed. Instead, her gaze slid downward. His leather pants clung to his
athletic thighs, and his whole body was damp, as if it had been drenched by a wave.
Beads of water dotted his strong chest like a sky filled with stars.
Was she staring?
What kind of sick person stared at a ripped, glistening torso instead of a
blood-splattered neck and face?
A horny one.
Melissandra seemed to notice the sensual tension filling the room and Sparrow’s
quick silence at Rowen’s entrance. “Should we go above deck and help these knights
clean up a bit? Obviously there appears to be a blood and guts issue.”
Sparrow blushed because she knew her skills with Wiccan were not at the same level
as her aunts. To be honest, she wished she could whip out a really cool spell and impress
Rowen with her abilities. After all, who knew what kind of otherworldly women he was
usually surrounded by?
Morgana took the cue from her sister and pushed past the knights before they could
answer. “We’ll have this place clean in a jiffy. Although if my dear niece’s telekinesis
skills were up to par, her bedroom wouldn’t look like a disaster zone.”
Sparrow blushed once more as everyone else headed above deck. Only Rowen stayed
behind, and she wondered if he’d sensed her discomfort.
I’ve seen your talents in action. You flew brilliantly.” He smiled. “Who needs
telekinesis?”
She laughed, comfortable around this stunning man for the first time. “Thanks.”
Shall we go above deck for some air?” Rowen gestured for Sparrow to go before
him.
As she walked past his form, Sparrow became all the more aware of how his body
filled the space. The scent of blood and a strange odor, probably demon guts, drifted
through the space, a reminder that the gentle voice belonged to a deadly warrior. She
halted next to him.
He was so tall, Sparrow had to tilt her head up to gaze at his face. She smiled lightly
when his aqua gaze recognized her close proximity. Her hands hovered just above his
cheeks. Sparrow gazed at him and began chanting in her head until a subtle glow
emanated from her hands. The light reached the skin of Rowen’s cheeks and buffed
away the flecks that had dried on his skin.
As she finished chanting and the glow dissipated, Sparrow thought she saw a hungry
look pass through Rowen’s expression. Lust?
Sparrow smiled and withdrew her hands. “See, I’m not completely useless.” Happy
to pull off the simple cleansing spell, Sparrow did her best to saunter seductively down
the hall. After all, she didn’t want that to be the last time she received that hungry look
from her warrior.

Review Rating: 4 LIGHTNING BOLTS

Review: Secrets of the Sky is book 2 in a thrilling new series that is bound to stand out in the paranormal genre. Welcome to the Fog Realm, and in between, a meeting place, where creates all orts and shape can meet, connect, move on. Humans, by far, aren't the only beings any longer. Secrets of the Sky has opened up an entire new universe of paranormal beings of all kinds....

Where there are realms, there are those that stand to protect them. They are known as Knights. Strong, powerful and all oh so yummy heroes that will keep things in smooth operation. In Secrets of the Sky, we meet Rowan. Rowan's mate in this book is Sparrow, who has powers of her own and can change form. Together, the sparks ignite.

I admire the very creative world building Ms. Shields has set up. World building takes a lot of effort and can bog a story down if there's too much explanation, but that's not a worry here. The vivid descriptions, the smooth transition from scene to scene gave me an enjoyable ride while reading. I haven't read the first book in the series, which is Secrets of the Fog, but I didn't feel like I'd jumped into the middle of something I didn't understand, so I would say Secrets of the Sky does fine as a standalone. i do want to go back and read the first book, though, as this one intrigued me.  I have high  hopes for this series and think that a new and exciting name has entered the paranormal genre. Great job on a great book!

  5. Excellent post/review, ladies. Congratulations, Jaye. As the co-author of a series, I understand how difficult it can be to craft each novel as a standalone. Here's to many sales!
