Review: Shadow

Title: Shadow

Author: Laurann Dohner

Publisher: Ellora’s Cave

Length:  novel

Heat Level: Hot

Rating: 5 LIGHTNING BOLTS

Reviwer: Tabitha

Blurb:
Beauty resents being labeled Gift Species. Everyone is way too overprotective, males aren’t even allowed to speak to her and so far true freedom eludes her. Then a big, sexy Species officer mistakes her for the enemy and takes her to the ground.
Shadow is dumbfounded. He has a Gift pinned under him—a big no-no. But Beauty is fascinated and wants to know Shadow a lot better. She is full of newly discovered, unrequited passion and he’s just what she needs to satisfy her curiosity.
For Shadow, sex means pain and revulsion. For Beauty, it was enslavement and ridicule. Two lonely souls who have never known a lover’s touch, together in a cabin in the woods. Each touch, every discovery brings them closer to a life they never thought possible…beyond even their dreams.

Review:
Laurann Dohner takes two of the most unlikely characters and forces them together and sparks fly. You did it again Mrs. Dohner. I’m never disappointed when I read a book by this very talented author. Kudos to you for a job well done.

This is book nine is the New Species series and just like all the rest it grabbed me from the first page and didn’t let go until the end. My only disappointment came when it was over. Now I’m chomping at the bit for the next one.

Shadow is a very damaged character that has endured more than anyone should. He was abused by humans for sexual experiments and it left a bad taste in his mouth when it comes to humans. However, with time he has learned to live with the pain and come to terms with the fact that not all humans are bad. Sadly, he still chooses to live a solitary life feeling he is too damaged for anyone to love.

This character just broke my heart. For such a strong and virile man he is scarred. The more I read the more attached I became. Shadow earned his HEA and then some.

Beauty is a gift female. Gifts are just what they are named for. They were species that were given to individual humans as a gift. But they were treated just as bad as the species in the labs. Most are fearful of everything and everyone but not Beauty. She wants to live a normal life and not be treated as if she is made of glass. Even through it all, she thrives and grows emotionally stronger. Hoping one day to be with the one person that will be her mate.

I loved the fact that this character overcame so much and came out the other side stronger and not broken. When she meets Shadow, she is determined to fight for the man she loves. No matter how hard he tries to push her away.

This was a beautiful story and really tugged at my heartstrings. I felt an emotional bond with this couple that grew the more I read. There is nothing I can say negatively about this story. It is a true fairy tale.

I give this story a five and hope you will read the series. You won’t be disappointed. Congrats, on another amazing story Mrs. Dohner. Don’t forget to check out Mrs. Dohner’s other series as well. I have read them all and loved them. She is a guaranteed good read.

Happy Reading,
Tabitha Blake
