Guest Blogger Sara Humphreys + Giveaway

My Publishing Muses

I was asked a very interesting question for this blog. It was one that I don’t believe I’ve been asked to write about before and it really got me thinking. The question was “what three people inspired your path to publication?”

Christine Feehan. Like most authors, I started as a reader. I fell in love with paranormal romance novels when I read Christine Feehan’s novel Dark Prince. Oh. My. God. It was like…where has this been all my life? Let me tell you something, if they assigned books like that in high school, I would’ve read a hell of a lot more. Christine Feehan got me going but I’m inspired by all of my fellow authors. I want to be better and write as beautifully as so many of my peers do. They raise the bar and keep me moving forward.

My parents. One of the greatest blessings in my life has been to have Carol and Charlie Taney for parents. Since I can remember, they have encouraged me to follow my passions, work hard and chase my dreams. They taught me that nothing is outside of our reach if we work hard enough and remain true to the things that we really love. When I said I wanted to try and publish my first novel, there was no hesitation. They smiled and said, “Go for it!” Unwavering support. Unconditional love. That’s the birthplace of inspiration.

My husband. He’s the biggest cheerleader I’ve got. When I told him about my desire to publish my first novel he said, “Excellent. What do we need to do?” We. He didn’t say what do you need to do. Nope. It was we. We’re a team and we’ve been tackling life together for the past 18 years. Kids. Bills. House. Work. Publishing has been no different. Many husbands might have balked at the idea of their wife writing and publishing sexy romance but not my guy. Some guys might’ve rolled their eyes and treated it like nothing more than a pipe dream but not Will.

My very first royalty check arrived the other day and he happened to be home having lunch with me. (A special treat for both of us.) It seemed only fitting that he was there when I opened that envelope. It’s his success as well as mine because I couldn’t have done it without him.

How about you? Who inspires you?

  8. I loved hearing about your journey. The two authors that made me want to write were Georgette Heyer and Stephanie Laurens. My husband said do it and my MIL is my cheerleader, but the people who really showed me how were my CPs.

  9. Love the sound of Untamed! Christine Feehan's Dark Prince was one of my first paranormal romance books too and I loved it (and I agree that if they used more contemporary books in schools we might get kids to read more and learn the joy of reading..lol). I'd have to say that the person that inspires me the most and has been the most supportive in whatever endeavor I undertake has been my mother - she's both my cheerleader and the bossy woman who pushes me to do more and work hard at what I try

  10. Will have to add this to my list. I love all kinds of books. My inspiration started from reading short stories written by my grandmother and all the wonderful history she imparted.
