Review:

Miriam Newman writes the way an accomplished weaver creates a tapestry. Thread by thread, weaving up and over the weft, the subtle color of detail builds until at last a     masterpiece lies before us.
The King’s Daughter is a historical fantasy romance, but a romance with a difference. The main character, Tarabenthia (Tia), is a winsome young lady who seems powerless against the implacable forces of hatred and brutality, as her father’s kingdom is torn apart by a blood-thirsty enemy and she must escape to an unknown land as a slave.
Here are a few example of Newman’s poetic writing: “There were horses nearby eating grass. I could hear the rip and grind of their teeth, the restless shuffling of their legs and their soft blowing.”. . . “We were women, so we waited. Some habits die hard; a man had summoned me, so I went.” And yet ironically, she is also a warrior: “The Old One within me was fully unleashed, berserk with the pure lust of battle, and I wanted to kill until I was blind with it.”
Above all, this book is a finely told romance between Tia and a most improbable lover. Her lover is so interesting, in fact, that the tale of their passion held me in its grip throughout the entire book.
“He kissed me speechless, one hand wrapped in my hair and the other bunching up my robe, freeing me so that I could sink onto him with a gasp of unashamed delight. It was still the easiest way for me to make love, though we had found others. ‘You have me at your mercy,’ he pointed out. ‘Take advantage of it.’ I did, coupling with him on the cool earth beneath the pomegranate tree while the full moon of the Goddess shone down on two of her creatures honoring Her, infusing each other with Her power in every touch.”
I will not discuss the rest of the plot except to say that Tia finds love and loses it, and at the end holds it dear to her heart forever. She loses a kingdom and yet finds it again. It is a book to bring tears to the eyes and a catch to the throat, and a love story to remember always.

    2. Ah, Nikki, I have my methods (rubs hands, chuckles wickedly). What a beautiful site you have here. I appreciate your time and Erin's, so very much. My muse is in Norway right now--I have no idea why--I'm never consulted. So maybe we'll have another one for Storm Goddess before the year is out! Thanks again.
