Lauren Layne’s New Adult novel tells the story of a girl with secrets, a guy with scars, and a love that could save them both... or destroy them.

When Olivia Middleton abandons the glamour of Park Avenue for a remote, coastal town in Maine, everyone assumes she’s being the kind do-gooder she’s always been. But Olivia has a secret: helping an injured war veteran reenter society isn’t about charity—it’s about penance. Only, Olivia’s client isn’t the grateful elderly man she’s expecting. Instead, he’s a brooding twenty-four-year-old who has no intention of being Olivia’s path to redemption . . . and whose smoldering gaze and forbidden touch might be her undoing.

Paul Langdon doesn’t need a mirror to show him he’s no longer the hotshot quarterback he was before the war. He knows he’s ugly—inside and out. He’ll do anything to stay in self-imposed exile, even accept his father’s ultimatum that Paul tolerate the newest caretaker for three months or lose his inheritance. But Paul doesn’t count on the beautiful twenty-two-year-old who makes him long for things that he can never have. And the more she slips past his defenses, the more keeping his distance is impossible.

Now Paul and Olivia have to decide: Will they help each other heal? Or are they forever broken?

Review Rating: 5 LIGHTNING BOLTS

Review:  I've read quite a few Lauren Layne books and enjoyed them, but Broken, by far is my favorite. Full of so much character growth, emotion, and healing, I had a hard time putting it down.

Olivia is a returning character from a previous book, and to be honest, I wasn't sure in the previous book what I thought of her. She came across as snobby and slightly unlikable. Going into this book, I wasn't sure how I'd feel about her. I'm definitely glad to have to chance to read her story, because when it came down to it, she's not as bad as she seems.  Needing a break from her life, she takes a job caring for a man who needed it. What she didn't know what the man is about her age, and despite the wall he puts up, needs a lot of love.

Paul...Oh, let's see where to start. He's had a hell of a past few years. Physical and emotional wounds, trauma, and yeah he's feeling sorry for himself. I get it, though, but enough is enough! What I loved was no matter how he pushed Olivia away and showed just how much he didn't want her there, she didn't miss a beat to get back at him with a witty comment or a good comeback. She didn't take his crap.  She didn't give up.

They both have their highs and lows. Both feel broken beyond repair.

Layne shows us that with a little love, two people with a a painful past can find healing and love together. This is a story that will stay with me for quite sometime. It tugged on my heart. It made me laugh, made me cry, and I sure rooted for this couple to break down the barriers and let love in.
