VBT: Sweet Nothings & Author Interview

Sweet Nothings
Sugar Springs #2
By: Kim Law
Releasing January 1st, 2014

Blurb
Joanie Bigbee, cupcake baker extraordinaire, likes to keep her options open--and she's good at it. She's started and sold some 30 businesses in her postage stamp-sized Tennessee town, and at the moment she can be found in a short skirt and go-go boots, selling cupcakes out of the back of a converted Volkswagen van. What she moves on to next is anybody's guess. She knows better than to be tied down. In any way. She's watched every woman in her family fall head-over-heels, only to find themselves wondering how to pick up the pieces when love is lost.
When Nick Dalton shows up at the groovy cupcakery, all Joanie wants is a taste; a fling with no strings suits her just fine. But for Nick, a bite is not enough; he wants the whole cake: a big house, a family, true love. But love only makes you stupid, right? Joanie has to decide whether to follow where her free-spirit leads? or hold on to the sweetest thing she's ever known.

Tell me about yourself, and your writing.

The quick and dirty is that I’m a reformed math major and computer programmer, now sitting at home in my pajamas writing romance novels all day. My books are a mix of sexy and sweet, with a huge dollop of emotions tossed in.

How long have you been writing? How many published books do you have, and what genres?

I’ve been writing since 2006—I think—and first published in 2012. Sweet Nothings makes my fifth full length book out, and I also have a novella that just released last week. I currently write only straight contemporary, but I keep saying that someday I want to kill someone, so who knows, maybe I’ll branch into romantic suspense. Though I doubt it. I love contemporary too much.

Are you a plotter or do you write from the seat of your pants?

Complete plotter. If I try it any other way, it gets tossed every single time!

What is a typical writing day like for you?

Oh geez, this should be easy to answer. But it’s not. My typical day hasn’t quite formed yet. I’ve been writing full time for a year now, and though that should give a person the time to get it figured out, apparently I need more. Mostly I sleep until the cats force me out of bed to feed them. Check email and the news. Then I lose a couple hours somewhere. Sometimes I then need a nap. And finally I write. And then I spend the last three weeks before deadline staying up all night and writing like a lunatic.

The day I would like? To rise with a smile on my face at 6am, go for a refreshing walk, check the news and email, then churn out my words for the day. Then I’d like to take a small break, maybe go to a zumba class or catch an afternoon movie, and come back and edit what I wrote that morning. Don’t see that happening any time soon.

Who do you love to read? Favorite authors, favorite books?

I mostly read contemporary, though if I had more time I’d also read thrillers, romantic suspense, and maybe some time travel. I sometimes listen to those types of books on audio when I do sneak in a walk here and there. I’m a long-time Nora fan. Then there’s Kristan Higgins, Jill Shalvis, Rachel Gibson, Susan Mallery. Lots more, but those are the ones that’ll easily pull me away from my own work to be done.

What is something you'd like to accomplish in your writing career next year?

Next year? Two things. 1) Develop a freaking schedule and stick to it! I’m tired of burning the midnight oil. 2) Continue working to improve my writing. I’ve always studied a lot and taken a lot of classes. This year I’ve been so busy that those things have slid more than I’d like. A writer should never quit learning and improving their craft, so next year I’d like to make sure I work in plenty of time to do just that.

If you could have one paranormal ability, what would it be?

Read other people’s minds. But only on my command. I wouldn’t want unwanted thoughts bombarding me all the time. And I would only peek in when I see them thinking hard or studying about something. It would give me great insight into other people’s minds, and then you can bet that a lot of that would show up in my books!

If you could keep a mythical/ paranormal creature as a pet, what would you have?

Ummm…wow. That’s one I’ve never been asked. Can a person keep a centaur as a pet? It’s half person itself, so that might not work out. But they are interesting, don’t you think?

Tell us a little about your latest release.

I’d be glad to! Sweet Nothings is my cupcake book. As you might have guessed from the cover. Joanie is a little flaky, but she’s a sweetheart deep inside. She’s been hurt, and she has lots of walls, but hunky carpenter Nick Dalton shows up and immediately starts tearing them down. They’re about the two most opposite people you could imagine. He wants to settle down. She wants to play around. I had a lot of fun with this couple!

It’s the second book in my Sugar Springs series, which is set at the base of the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, and contains lots of secondary characters throughout the story.

What is something that you absolutely can't live without? (Other than family members)

Hmmm…I can’t imagine how I could survive without the internet.

Could you ever co author a book with someone? If so, who would you choose, and what would you write?

I don’t think so. Maybe. It if was a guy and he did the guy parts and I did the girl parts. That’s been done before, and I think that seems fun. But otherwise? No. I just want to do it myself. I drive myself crazy enough with just me. I can’t imagine tossing another person into the mix.

If you could spend a day with anyone from history, dead or alive, who would it be, and what would you do? What would you ask them?

Sorry, but I have no clue. I’ve never had an answer for this question.

What are some of your other hobbies outside of writing?

The last few years it’s just been writing. But I seem to recall hobbies. Oh, that’s the third thing I want to do in 2014! Get a hobby! Thanks for reminding me OK, in the past I’ve been into photography, cross-stitching, reading—of course—and I’d love to buy an old house and fix it up. Also, I like to paint and redo rooms in my own house. I find that very relaxing while rewarding at the same time. Plus, I can listen to an audio book while doing it.

What is something you've always wanted to do, but haven't done yet. Why not?

Climb a really big mountain. I’m not actually sure I’m brave enough. First I’d have to meet the right people to do it with, because no way would I go off on my own! Then I’d have to do it. And people die during these things. So yeah, I’m not sure I’m brave enough. Maybe a small mountain.

If you were on the staff to have a book adapted to movie, what would you pick?

Can I pick one of mine? I’ve love to see my Christmas book, Hot Buttered Yum, made into a Hallmark-type movie. I love Christmas movies anyway, but it has hot santas and warm fuzzies. Seems perfect to me ;)

What is a talent you wish you had, but don't?

Painting. I’ve always wanted to be able to paint. Or just draw something. But I have zero talent there.

Favorite color?

Purple.

Weather: Hot or cold?

76 degrees and breezy. I should live in Hawaii.

Favorite place to read?

In the swing on a 76 and breezy day.

Favorite meal

I love Italian food. Meatballs, pasta, cheese, and bread. Right? But my go-to, feel-good food has always been pinto beans, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese.

Favorite non-alcoholic drink.

I really only drink water these days, but every year for the holidays, my Granny would make boiled custard. After she passed away, I brought home her recipe, and I now make the boiled custard for the family. (In fact, I just made some for Thanksgiving!) I love it. It also holds many valuable memories for me that I will cherish my whole life.

If you could travel anywhere and do anything, no limits or money holding you back, where would you go?

I would love to travel all over Europe. Also, Egypt. But Europe for an extended time is my dream vacation.

Author Info
Award-winning author Kim Law wrote her first story, “The Gigantic Talking Raisin,” in elementary school. Although it was never published, it was enough to whet her appetite for a career in writing. First, however, she would try her hand at a few other passions: baton twirling, softball, and music, to name a few. Voted “Bookworm” and “Most Likely to Succeed” in high school, she went on to earn a college degree in mathematics.
Law spent years working as a computer programmer and raising her son, and she now devotes her time and energy to writing romance novels (none of which feature talking raisins).
She is a Romance Writers of America’s RITA® finalist, a past winner of the RWA’s Golden Heart® Award, and currently serves as president for her local RWA chapter. Her books can best be described as a light-hearted mix taking her readers on a sexy, fun, and emotional ride. A native of Kentucky, she now lives with her husband and an assortment of animals in her Middle Tennessee home.
